Hope everyone who celebrates it had a good Thanksgiving yesterday! The annual family get-together is always something I look forward too.
Also the “pretend I’m not diabetic for a day because apple pie exists”.
apple pie is good, fight me

What kind of fanfare is used to announce Emperor Butt?
Would music even carry underwater?
Very good question I hadn’t thought of before… but I would assume that Sarnothi have at least *some* form of music. Even if they never invented instruments that work underwater, they must at the very least have songs. Especially with how Resonance reacts to sound (at least so far as we know, with Selkie humming the tune her mother used to control her glowy eyes). I have never heard of any culture that doesn’t sing or create music in some form, I don’t see why they would be any different. Especially when they have an entire clan devoted to the arts.
Whale.
Song.
It’s not like we don’t have existing real-life animals who are underwater and also sing ^_^
yes music and sound carry VERY VERY VERY far under water. See Whale Song, shrimp clicking and Sonar for ships, planes, sonobouy and other human stuff. which actually are causing problems for the natural sounds being drown out.
Sounds (and music) can definitely carry underwater, as they are simply vibrations of the medium. Dolphins and whales can communicate through sound, and the sarnothi have no problem talking to each other underwater. I imagine their music would be mostly voice-based, as many of our traditional human instruments wouldn’t work that well underwater, but it’s possible sarnothi have created Resonance instruments.
Absolutely, sound carries incredibly well underwater, hence dolphins echolocation, dolphin speech, whale songs, and from us land dwellers, SONAR!
Your comment, maybe I pinged on something in that.
Ahhh, what youth today know, and what they don’t know. Do you remember pencils? Ah those were the days. When kids had to listen to the old folks tell stories, instead of ignoring everyone older than 35 in the room, including each other, to text links to “I stole your meme, Lulz!”, to their friends.
I mean why would you want to visit with elderly relatives?
I’m glad ever generation before the current one universally listened to and respected their elders.
“You can’t trust anyone over thirty.” – Jack Weinberg, 1964
“Our mothers were all very well in their way, but they know very little about their daughters’ problems.” – F. Scott Fitzgerald, 1920
Cant find the quote from Socrates, but growing up, at the dinner table of after dinner, we had to sit and listen to the stories, and some of the stories were very educational, what it means to be the only family on the whole block that wasn’t Morman, or having to sit still while the maid buttoned your shoes for you — because shoe buttons! What it meant to have polio, or pneumonia, scarlet fever, gather coal from the train tracks for the stove for a meal. Very real things, some of them not pleasant, but we had to sit there and be socialiable. Or… If not sociable, then quiet, so’s not to intrupt yer elders, cause we’re talking, here.
I learned a lot about labor unions and what it meant not to “belong” to the company store.
Look up “Between Music” and “AquaSonic” on Youtube. They’re a band from Denmark and they play a bunch of cool custom-made instruments and even sing underwater. It sounds equal parts eerie and great.
Hmmm… Is she calling him that because she’s not allowed to say “asshole” or does his proper full name actually sound similar to the Sarnothi word for butt?
Growing up with that would explain why he’s so cranky in all the videos.
Also, it’s interesting how friendly Pants looks in the flashback. Was Selkie not told about the attack?
She didn’t need to be told, she SAW it.
I figured since she’s not specifically mentioning the attack on Todd, I’d draw Pants looking “distractingly pleasant”.
Ah, so it’s more how the other kids are picturing it, rather than what Selkie is thinking. Got it.
You may have all my apple pie.
I do not know why I don’t like apple pie. I like apple sauce and apple cobbler, apple cake, and regular, raw apples.
I do know why I don’t like pumpkin pie. You may have that also. 😝
So what pies *do* you like?
Shouldn’t Pants be tagged?
Not if you want to take them out of the store.
Uh.. yes! He should be. 😡
I was archive binging, I tend to do that a lot and I came across one of the comics featuring Paul. Since we have found out that Selkie is an Echo, I wonder if Paul isn’t just a dream figment she created but one of the Sarnothi pantheon trying to guide her. I mean, he looks like a dragon but could easily be the Elder Eel God Han Shin Jian Tho (took me some time to find his name lol). I may be reading too much into it and we know so little about Echo abilities so far but it would be interesting!
Rather than pretend you are not a diabetic for the day because apple pie exists, can you pretend that you are diabetic who is being forced, perhaps unwillingly, to eat the apple pie and therefore taking all steps before and afterwards to ensure that your blood sugars stay stable through this traumatic experience? Take your sugars before and after and make sure you have a blood sugar stabilizing serving of protein and whatever pills or insulin controls the spike?
Oh don’t worry I did, took my pills and I didn’t go as nuts as I’m making it sound. Stuck to the meat and veggie options primarily.
Apples = vitamin C and fibre, both good things!
On a different topic, I wonder how long people find that it takes their comments to show up? I’m running 15-20 minutes before it posts after I submit a comment, from an i-Pad.
What lags do others experience, or is it just me?
Darn it, Dave. A couple weeks ago, I was reading comments over at Skin Horse and clicked on your avatar to see who the blue girl was. Since then I’ve been spending most of my free time reading through the Selkie archives. Now I’m finished, and I’m going to go into Selkie withdrawal, having to wait for the next installment like everyone else.
I WILL GORES YOU FOR THAT LATERS!!!
(Just kidding. Thanks for the interesting journey so far!)
Ha ha ha. Glad to have you on board. 😀
Welcome to the fan club! This is one of the better webcomics, isn’t it?
And yeah, I totally get you on that; I’m a binge reader, myself. Right now, I’m only following a slight handful regularly: Selkie, El Goonish Shive, Freefall, xkcd, and Kevin and Kell (which I binge about every other week).
Pants is very happy about his cameo.
No sweat on the color delay. Just remember, though, you are what you eat.
My girlfriend says that makes me fast, cheap, and easy.
Pants needs his tag…!
I’m still waiting for the day that we see some Sarnothi wearing some britches and we see the tag for Pants the Eel. I know another commenter mentioned wanting this to happen and I agree, it would be a delightful April Fools gag.
Ooopsie. Done!
You rock!
