Amanda has yet to make the Sparkly Eyes work on Lillian.
– – – – –
If you don’t already read Jade Griffin and Trevor Black’s webcomic Shards, today is a great day to start! I’ve been informed that Selkie is making a background cameo in today’s strip. My little girl’s traveling the world!
I got the idea for Hamud while watching news footage of the revolution and riots in Egypt this past winter, following the regime change. I don't mean to suggest this as his in-story origin, but it is his real-world inspiration. If that makes sense. Lillian's qi pao was designed after a few google searches. I love asymmetrical clothing designs, and I wanted something different from the kimonos she wore as the last two outfits we saw.
At least Officer Martin compared the search to hide and seek, and not a scavenger hunt.
Yeah:) I like him even more now!
… You know, why do I get the feeling that his parents abandoned him while they ditched town to get out of paying a debt or something? Also, Amanda, kid. I understand that you’re young, but pretty sure most kids your age would realize that now is NOT the time to be a prat. Just saying.
Nah, they’re missing or hurt, I bet.
I wonder if his parents were murdered or taken hostage or not or if they just abandoned him.
… Wait no, abandoned doesn’t sit right with me here.
“Let us know as soon as you find anything.”
Implying find his parents. If they find his parents and they abandoned him, they aren’t going to just return the kid to them. Doesn’t work like that. So I’m going to go with they’re missing due to some sort of something that was out of their control/against their will.
I agree. On Monday, I thought abandoned, but now I’m thinking “missing” with a high chance of murdered. This one felt super sad.
That’s a pretty good point Tillia, but you have to wonder what sort of event would make them leave their kid behind. It really doesn’t seem to me like a likely thing to happen. I’m just drawing a blank for what could make that happen. But I think that if the police are on it, it must be pretty bad.
they were kidnapped, but they got him to hide just before the kidnappers broke the door down s that they wouldn’t get him.
Or they went out and left him with a sitter, and didn’t come back, for whatever reason. Something about the cop’s demeanor gives me the feeling that stuff like this, parents (or other people) just disappearing isn’t terribly uncommon around here.
Possibly they went on a day-trip somewhere and left him with a sitter, yes. And were expected back some time ago, but…haven’t been found anywhere. (Note that we don’t know what agency Officer Martin belongs to; he could be with the state police, rather than the city police; we just know that Hamud probably lives/lived in the city prior to his parents vanishing.
Officer Martin’s demanor doesn’t make me believe it’s unusually common for people to just go missing – just that, perhaps, he sees a lot of it in his line of work or has some very strong suspicions about what’s happened to poor Hamud’s parents based on the clues they’ve found so far.
Herp! Made it here early, only three comments so far, nice.
π
Yup! Selkie’s made her guest cameo appearance at Shards! It’s up now. Thanks for the promotin’, Dave:) Can’t wait for more strips! π
Upon discovering this, I have added the comic to my favorites. I love the premise. π
I went to Shards but couldn’t find the strip with the Selkie cameo… what am I missing?
Here’s the link. She’s…stage right of Waldo. http://www.56shards.com/2011/06/16/ch1p83/
Oy, what a world.
Did anyone click the Shards link? One of the Israelites has webbed feet…
Hee hee! And a fishy dress!
Also, Waldo. Selkie is in panels 2 and 3. π
Okay, now I see her. Someone had to actually point her out to me. Poor Selkie, stuck in a place with very little water. π
awe that poor little boy he is so worried about his mom not liking roughhousing. i have a feeling it’s not abandonment either. I can’t wait to see amand’s face when she finds out heather is leaving.
Um, is Hamud supposed to be Arabic? Because he’s colored like he’s from southern Africa…
And my Uncle is Italian but he’s colored like a Mexican. What’s your point?
He’s supposed to be Egyptian in ethnicity, so I was aiming for a more African skin-color.
Egyptains are much paler than what most people would consider “African”, as it is in North Africa (although Hamud’s colouring is still possible, especially if he is from the south). For example, when my white British mother went to Abu Dhabi wearing a headscarf people in the UAE often mistook her for an Egyptian.
True, they’re generally paler, but there are still many Egyptians who have extremely dark coloring. So this is completely reasonable.
to all of the above:
I still say it doesn’t matter.
Man, this post makes me feel sad all over! And that poor guy… did his parents simply leave him?
That last panel’s conversation is one that Lillian has had several times before… That’s certainly my impression, anyway.
And with just a few sentences, you show (again) that Lillian is several kinds of tough.
I feel like Hamud’s parents may no longer be alive…
Why is Amanda such a brat? I hate her more every time I see her!!
I should hate Amanda but I don’t lol. Yeah she’s being a total brat but I can’t help but feel that her prissiness is a defense mechanism. Like she feels worthless as she has not been adopted and this is the only way she can make herself feel important again. Still that doesn’t give her the right to be such a jerk!
This strip makes me like Lillian a lot more, and Amanda a lot less. (Though I do like her, I’ve always had an inclination to those prissy stuck-ups…)
it’s been a while since I’ve been active on this website haha!
But, just so you know, I miight post up some fan art this weekend… Yeaahhh.
Woo!
I have loved Lillian since the beginning when she told Todd, “Not to make any promises… and that he was an unsolved variable.” Also I loved have she Explained Selkie to Todd right before Selkie gives him the Puke-Fish.
Even though the premise is incredibly sad Hamund’s warning about his mom still got a smile out of me.
Man, Amanda got a lot cuter since the last time we saw her. ;P Maybe she’s been practicing.
For some reason, I tend to think of Lillian as a sane version of Von Pinn the nanny from Girl Genius. I also tend to nickname her “the dragon” to myself.
Isn’t she currently a 10 foot tall mecha-leopard?
ThatΒ΄s why I said “a SANE version”. Lillian could probably transform into a fire-breathing dragon, but she will only do so when her charges are threatened. Besides, she studied Judo for a reason…
That’s a pretty astute comparison in my opinion haha.
Hamud is making me cry. Wisconsin is not very much like Egypt, so far as I know, and he had to get here with his parents. Most of the state is very nice, and terrible tragic stuff doesn’t happen as often as in large cities. I’m full of dread… I am so scared that his parents dumped him like an unwanted pet and ran off to Vegas or somewhere… or, more likely, hit a deer on a county road and are lying in coroner drawers waiting to be identified. I hope that cop adopts him, since I can’t.
P.S. I know that cop. I went to high school with him. This being the internet, I hope his name is Jay.
I haven’t decided on a first name for Officer Martin, Jay is as good an idea as any!
I knew a Jay Martin once, nice guy but we got in a fight once. Lasted for about an hour. Best match of Killer Instinct ever! Dude just wouldnt submit to my Cinder attacks.
Dave, if you don’t mind me saying, I don’t think Lillian’s skin works so well here. It looks to me less like wrinkles, and more like a serious skin disease. Unless she’s supposed to have one?
Ha ha, yeah I may have gone overboard on the wrinkles. XD
Dude, my friend was reading this and (You know, she’s one of those hardcore shippers) she said that she ships Sandra and Wu and then flipped out for about an hour
Ha ha, awesome. I think this may be my first documented shipping. π
Yeah, but she ships just about everything. XD
Much older, of course. Just kind of weird to ship little kids…
Your art has some potential. Yes, it’s not the best, but I’m sure it will be better than my favourite webcomics soon. Um, I’m sorry if that sounded rude…
Not at all. π Thanks.
I’ve been following Selkie for a few years and just started rereading it. I don’t recall ever learning what happened to his parents.
What happened? ?
I don’t think we do.
Ooof. Talk about mood whiplash there.
