Oh, I can think of a *couple* ways this won’t end well.
Anyone?
Anyone?
1) Plo Quar comes back, doesn’t engage with Selkie because she wants her to stay with Todd, Selkie doesn’t understand, ***Lasers***
2) Plo Quar comes back, engages with Selkie, wants her back, huge custody battle with Todd arguing that Plo Quar abandoned Selkie, Plo Quar arguing that Todd and Selkie aren’t even the same species, much anger, ***Lasers***
3) Plo Quar can’t be found. Selkie thinks her mother is dead, ***Lasers***
4) Plo Quar comes back, shacks up with Scar, Selkie discovers who her father is, ***possible Lasers***
Eugh, no good can come of this and it’s the weekend.
Lasers aside, birth parents getting involved with their adopted out kids does happen in real life, and the results are not always “disaster”. In the comic it will lead to drama because of course it will, that’s what makes a story, but I don’t think Dave will go straight for worst case scenario here. ๐
I’m more in favor of Plo Quar staying away out of the fear that if she emerges, she’ll be of danger to Selkie, or else that people are trying to use Selkie to get at her in some fashion. Either way, safer to stay away for a few more years.
This is why even ancient presidents and their families get to keep Secret Service agents. Imagine if terrorists were to capture beloved President Armitage and demand that we give them a Hydrogen Bomb (and the keys to drive it) or they start mailing small body parts to major news networks all over the country.
Given she chose to let Selkie go, and Selkie is happy/settled with her father, it would be surprising if she fights to get her back. There could be a lot of sadness and sorting out of feelings, though, on everyone’s part. I’ve heard really positive things about open-ended adoptions (where the birth parents still can see the kids). It really depends on how all the parents interact, and some on the kids as well.
While I find this possibility intriguing, I also find it utterly implausible. Not that Dave couldn’t possibly pull it off, but… wow. First, you’d have to have both Todd and Plo Quar interested in a cross-species relationship at all. Then you’d have to have both of them actually compatible, an utter coincidence.
Then, remember Todd’s reaction to Selkie eating the fishies alive? Imagine what sort of horrible habits a full-grown Sarnothi might have that might horrify Todd in terms of his vegetarianism, his pacifism, his sense of the civilization of mankind…
…it just seems like a really bad idea, on the surface, that would require a lot of weird coincidences to make happen. I’m not sure my sense of “willing suspension of disbelief” would survive a twist that bizarre.
On top of which, it’d undermine some of the wonderful messages this comic has about adoption and about parenting and relationships. We’ve got this delightfully mixed-up family thing going, with various kids learning what it’s like to be loved by an adoptive parent (even as some people try to claim that adoption is somehow a “lesser” relationship compared to “real” parent/child bonds), and I would think that having Plo Quar get together with Todd would weaken that message tremendously.
…I’m not even sure what my reasoning is; that’s mostly a gut feeling with a certain amount of quick assumptions. But still.
Pro: (1) It would resolve the fact that Selkie loves both Todd and Plo Quar. (2) Todd does not seem to have had anything approximating romance in his life since the breakup, except for the failed not-quite-a-date with Mina. (3) Dave might have been using Avery’s family as foreshadowing.
Con: (1) Dave’s long-term plan might instead be to have Plo Quar and Scar openly be a couple, possibly related to inter-clan peace. (2+) See Kilyle’s post.
Twist: Amanda is the one shooting lasers, forged from the depth of her hate for the Anderson sons. Plus, Andy came back, Plo Quar had to be dragged back.
Until Agent Then took the Bowtie, that was an entirely plausible option… but now that it’s gone to some government Warehouse 13 type of “Research Facility” with “Top Men” working on it… i doubt it’s possible now, unless Plo Quar did a bit of recon on her own when Todd adopted her, but before it was taken, and now knows where they live, then otherwise, i’m not sure if she COULD find her now that it’s gone…
Soon, it’s like that kids book, No Mommy, I Have Two Dads Instead Only Selkie will have two dads, a Mom, and a half, and a ..er … Step-Amanda.
The definition of fine is powdery, not fine is chunky. And it doesn’t get much finer than Almond Butter,… With orange marmalade, Oh! My! Goth! A’course, on keto you don’t get marmalade, but Todd could eat it for you,…
No, it is step. Amanda’s bio dad is Todd, but Todd is Selkie’s adoptive father, that makes them Step-Siblings. Half-Siblings, is when one of the bio parents is the same, the other is not. Step-siblings is when one of a kid’s bio parents becomes the parent of a non-bio kid.
Given all the undersea politics we have seen lately and Selkie’s controversial parentage, it seems extremely likely that Plo Qar gave Selkie up to keep the child safe. I assume that Plo Qar has been on the run/in prison/deeply undercover for the past several years. All will eventually be explained and forgiven (possibly after lasers!).
i know that when i go to various sites and try to post comments, it requires me to re-login every single post, but if i turn off the blocker, then it remembers me for the 2nd and additional ones, though i still have to login for the first because it doesn’t remember me from the last time i visited the page…
I’m not 1005 sure what could be causing that to be honest. One thing I can try is to specifically add you to the whitelist and we can se if that mitigates it. Lyrical’s ad-blocker suggestion may also hold water, if you’re willing to try that. But I’ll put you on the whitelist and we’ll see how that plays out.
Last panel, it’s such a close-up that it’s hard to determine Todd’s facial expression… is he Pissed, and showing the tiny points of his pupils in anger, or is he Surprised, with his eyes really really wide?, or is it Scared, and he’s starting to go into a “fight or flight” response? I’m hoping it’s just surprised, and that he’ll have the whole “WHY are you searching for her?” argument out of earshot… though i doubt it, as Selkie is in a quiet location, actively BEING quiet, so yeah, i’m sure she’s heard every word they’ve said so far…
Dave: you’re killings us Doc while we wait for the next strip!… ๐

Sometimes parents don’t do rational things. Sometimes situations change.
5) Nothing particularly unusual happens. ***Lasers***
True, dat.
6) Plo Quar falls in love with Todd and they raise Selkie together (like Agent Brown, Carrie and Benny). ***Still lasers***
***Lasers for days***
The good ending only achievable by 100% completion and by choosing an option you’d basically need a strategy guide to know is the correct option.

Selkieโs mom is a zombie. The drama is us, watching the story become an โedgyโ comedy.
Her mom i bet isnt far away and has kept tabs on selkie
Then Selkie finds out. Amanda comes in and snarks at Selkie and ***lasers!!***
Genesee! ๐
Twist: Amanda is the one shooting lasers, forged from the depth of her hate for the Anderson sons. Plus, Andy came back, Plo Quar had to be dragged back.
Sandersons* The SANDERSONS were the ones who returned her.
watching her from afar would indeed be a nice twist

I’m really liking that about this story. There’s also a strong theme going about forgiveness, too (I wish real-life worked that way).
You were right the first time. Half.
Amanda and Selkie have the same father – Todd – but different mothers, so they are HALF-sisters.
No, step-siblings are from your parent (biological or adoptive) marrying someone who has children (biological or adoptive).

It is half.
Clearly it’s “Half-Step”.
no… a 5FT. Step… now roll for initiative.
You get a natural 21 for that. You roll, I’ll lol.

On the run. She was in the background when Antoine picked Marta up at the airport. Panel 8.
Dave – Questions questions.
This thing is still making me sign in each time. Is that the new normal?
I just made a post, hit POST COMMENT, and it disappeared from the COMMENT box, but didn’t show up in the comments.
Sometimes posts go to the spam filter and Dave has to manually approve them. I have always needed to sign in for each comment.
do you have an AD-Blocker in use?

Well now I want to be 1005 sure of *something* in my life. It would be nice.

eep
He drew the eyeball reeeeeally big,
just so he could draw the pupil reeeeeally small. ๐
He did do that, enormous beeeeeg eyeballs, little tiny pupils. Tiny pupils, Much Smaller even than 1st graders.
All these lasers. What about race cars and aeroplanes?
(Plo Quar took the Spear of Selene.)
