I imagine construction is more fun when you have lasers.
Pohl is the kind of Sim City player who thinks purposely deploying the natural disasters is slightly monstrous. Me, I like watching Godzilla try to outdo a UFO for most kills.

Is there any reason they are scrambling to make these underwater setlements onstead of just housing them in a hotel/gym, at least in the interim?
At a guess? Forcing them to go 100% dry-life right off the bat is considered cruel by someone in the government. the Sarnothi are an amphibious race, after all, and they’re already going to have to answer for the ‘Abandon a child to the foundling care system just to see what will happen’ portion of this experiment.
Selkie’s mom herself did that, to be fair. I think we saw the government only got involved much later.
The Government still left her there, though.
Selkie and her mom lived in the settlement first.
I sure hope they’re doing a combination. The refugees coming ashore need emergency shelter from the weather first. Moving them to the underwater settlement can only happen after there’s someplace for them to go.
I suppose the government would be happy to let as many as were willing to stay above water do so, but most of them are going to want to get back to some semblance of a three-dimensional life.
i guess there are simply THAT MANY that they need to use every possible place they got – hotel, gym and underwater. heck, i wouldn´t be surprised of pohl takes in someone, he´s softhearted, plus for all we know one of the refugees could be a relative/old friend
The families with the eggs will need homes where they can be together as well, and probably as soon as possible – we don’t know how close any are to hatching and those tanks were small travel tanks not comfortable infant tanks like Pohl family’s tank is. (to quote some awesome from previous page comments – Mango Unchained was not elected, and so current refugee problems will be presumably wave-handed by Dave)
Laser-powered underwater Minecraft.
It would be convenient if I could just punch a tree a couple times and have it cough up a perfectly shaped construction block.
A latex wetsuit? Always thought they were neoprene.
A wetsuit allows the water in, holding it against your skin where your body heat warms it. In weather like that, I’d think a better choice would be a drysuit, which is waterproof.

I get the impression he wasn’t wearing either one in the first place, regardless…
You’re just going to expose my wrong-ness and misinformation like that? How dare you. >_>
Dave I’m a scuba diver so if you have any questions feel free to email me at nikkjdh@gmail.com 🙂
Well at least I quit complaining about you putting the buttons on the wrong side of the shirts/coats. 😛
This new site don’t remember us? I had to tell it my name and email earlier, but I figgered – new site, don’t know me yet.
Gotta do it again for this post.
Hmm. I’ll have to look into that.
I suspect Janice is not an expert in diving. Her work has probably been exclusively on land.
It is a good thing Avery did not go any deeper. The mammalian diving reflex kicks in when the mouth and nose get covered – often with a splash, not submersion, but can also begin to kick in when the diaphragm reacts to the cold from the torso being submerged.
Did you know he actually did something very heroic there? If he lost his footing they likely would have lost Avery. Also, get the guy into a warm location and out of his clothes NOW.
Which just underlines how hazardous the situation is for the Sarnothi. How many of them are torpid under the water now, gone into hibernation?
I am thinking the Sarnothi would have had few advantages in our recent situation in Thailand, as from what I understand the water was so dirty they would not have been able to breath in it, and so dark as a result that with lights you could only see four to six inches from your eyes.
after wat janice said, i´m kinda worried for the ones that *don´t* make it to the surface…..just how bad are things in sarnoth that people are risking everything just to get away?!
The new emperor explicitly kicked them out, seems like the ones leaving weren’t given a choice.
…Let’s just say that you’re not going to see very many old, disabled, immuno-compromised, and/or injured Sarnothi showing up on shore.
Yeah, there are going to be a lot of orphans and widows.
Everything is more fun with lasers!!!
So pretend they’re in minecraft? Possibly?
At least we have accounted for the welfare of both Selkies biological parents.
Wetsuit’s gonna swiftly turn into a layer of ice in this weather- poor FBI guy!
One would think that fishermens’ “waders” would be the best thing for s/o in Avery’s situation?
