Yep, Plo Quar is probably going to get her tail end kicked by either todds sisters OR andi Possibly todds mom. She may also get one of those TALKS… that are very serious threat implications.
I would very much like to see a conversation between Plo Quar, Grandma, and Grampa.
In the meantime, I feel so bad for Selkie. I said it before but it bears repeating: Among the Refugee Sarnothi, she’s bound to end up meeting a lot of people like Behr. And that’s going to hurt. A lot. 🙁
Though it apparently has not registered when others have said it over the last couple of weeks I’ll repeat it: Given how controversial or downright hated Plo Quar is by parts of Sarnothi society, it seems most likely that her giving Selkie up for adoption and staying out of her life has been done to PROTECT her daughter. At the very least, wait till we get her side of the story before condemning her as a terrible person who should be harshly punished.
That’s what I was mainly thinking. Although Selkie was revealed to be an echo, her mother wanted to hide that so she wouldn’t be used for wrongdoing or be abducted. If they end up together again, they each would know where they be at, and that could lead to some brutal ransom or interrogation.
I mean it’s been set up to be similar to Agatha’s background in Girl Genius, right? Her uncle gave her a device that kept her safe by suppressing her powers — because he didn’t have many options other than that, given how strong she was at a young age — and then he wound up leaving her with her guardians (who she knew of as her parents) and heading off to… I think it was to find his brother, Agatha’s dad? Or possibly to fight off the main villain of the tale. A task only few could accomplish, and which he could not refuse to undertake even though it meant leaving the child alone (though in good hands).
Obviously there’s gonna be many distinctions between the two tales, but there’s a lot of similarities and I’ve never once felt negative toward Agatha’s uncle, who seems to be a nice person (even though he’s from essentially a villainous clan). Plo Quar has the added detail of being a Person of Interest in a civil war, and has made quite a few enemies, and so she doesn’t have the luxury of toting a kid around with her like she’s playing Wolf and Cub.
Sometimes, giving your child away truly is in the best interests of the child.
Ah, this makes me heart hurt for her.
Same, my heart sank a little on that last page.
Poor kiddo.
Slight typo: “wated” instead of “wanted” in panel 2
Selkie needs a hug.
And Todd needs to have a chat with her “mom”…
That last panel is masterful storytelling without a single word. Bittersweetly done, Dave.

Just to clarify, I’m not hating on Plo Quar. I understand all the reasons she felt it necessary to hide Selkie.
I’d still like to see a conversation between her mother & her grandparents, mostly because I’m interested in seeing how that would play out.

Also, dang it, this better not inspire my Muse, I have enough on my plate as it is.
But if there’s ever a fic that makes Loki a little orphan woobie who gets adopted by (presumably) Tony then you’ll know what inspired it. Grr.
So. The mum is still alive. Interesting.
