Coming from an introvert (or possibly ambivert), there’s little worse than being pushed into a new experience in front of everyone without having the slightest model from which to draw. Letting other people take the first step goes a long way toward reducing this anxiety.
And it’d be even worse in a case like this, even if these characters aren’t introverts. You still feel like you’re under attack, and the defensive protocols take precedence in your brain.
Until we invented balloons and aircraft, humans were strictly 2-dimensional people. Stuck to the ground. (yeah, we could climb mountains, but we were still stuck to the planet’s surface.)
It’s going to be tough for the Sarnothi (the ones who just came out of the water) to get used to a 2-dimensional world.
“His pattern indicates two-dimensional thinking. ” –Spock, Star Trek, the Wrath of Khan
Better than one-dimensional thinking. Y’know, the kind where you’re being chased by a vehicle faster than you, and so you just run straight ahead of it, instead of darting down alleys or going inside buildings or the like.
Or the larger idea of “I no longer have this option available to me. This annoys me.” That seems to be kind of a constant theme with humanity, in my experience.
Man. Tehk is kinda like Selkie in a weird way.
Also their names just make me think of Star Trek for some strange reason now. It’s cool but it’s weird.
Hey, Mina? Get Selkie up there to share something first, THEN ask the new kids.
Having a kindred spirit in the class might help. Even if she’s a crazy mad scientist.
This! You have an asset; put her to use.

Have the whole class share! The humans are just as new to the Sarnothi kids, and it’ll be more fun!
Selkie will probably claim them as minions in her evil lair.
Just registered Tehk has freckles, have we seen that on Sarnothi(Sarnoths, Sarnothians?) before?
Selkie’s mom, I believe.
I thought it was the facial markings coming in.
My dad and now nephews scrape their fingers on the ceiling of our mobile home while trying to take shirts off etc.
It’s not all it’s cracked up to be, kids.
I’m 6’4″. I used to crack my head on the ceiling air conditioner in my parent’s trailer *all the time*.
I used to say that hitting my head on it gave me just enough amnesia that the next time I walked by I’d smack it again.

Also known as “The Prometheus School of Running Away From Things” (thank you, CinemaSins).
It’s a reasonable concern.
Meh, touching ceilings is overrated.
(Tall Guy Here)
While I’m sure touching the ceiling is part of it, I think he’s more talking about freedom of movement.
In water, you move in four dimensions. Up, down, side to side, doesn’t matter. On dry land? Way more limited.
3 dimensions you mean. The 4th dimension is normally considered to be time, which I don’t think you intended.

I’m 6ft 3in. Touching ceilings is nothing.
5 foot 2 inches. Yes it is. 😀
easily done. six feet tall
This has probably been asked before, but has Dave ever revealed the precise nuances of how Sarnothi plurals work?
Yes: If it confuses you, it’s working.
6’5″ here, and feeling slightly smug at my ability to touch ceilings
Seriously, that would be MADDENING. It’s amazing they even can walk, but to be forced to… man..
my aunt would hold me up to touch the ceiling growing up so I now how she feels xD
5’6″ here. Our living room ceiling is…not high. I have been known to punch out the diffuser on the ceiling light when taking off a tee-shirt.
