Happy Independence Day to my fellow Americans, and happy Selkie Update Day to everyone else. π If you missed it, I had a holiday-themed sketch posted over the weekend. It involves dangerous acts of derring-do!
I also have a huge Fan Art update to share today. First is some adorable Sims 3 screenshots by Shiori Tsumi:
And not one not twelve, but SEVENTEEN character models with various cute outfits sent by Saphraira:
Thank you both!
I had to figure out a few basics of the orphanage floor plan for these backgrounds. It's four stories tall and shaped a bit like a lowercase g.
Continuing my judgmental streak, I worry about Barb’s apparent method of deflecting Heather’s questions/concerns. I could also be entirely wrong and they’ll be the best parents ever; after all, the party prospect certainly did cheer her up.
I’ll just show myself out.
Aww, poor Heather. I would have been a stubborn butt if I were her and insisted on saying goodbye.
Heather’s going to get murdered, isn’t she?
O_o
love it
Your reaction made me laugh. :p
This isn’t “Running Scared” π
I’m voting for her getting so mentally messed up by her adopted parents that she herself becomes a murderess in her late teens. π
I’m thinking Barbara and Kenneth will be good-natured but incompetent parents. The kind that will buy their kid Disneyland if she trips instead of giving her a band-aid.
I sincerely hope you’re right.
But her parents are giving off a weird vibe.
Okay while I’m not AS worried as Dean, I do see where he’s coming from. Heather’s new parents just seem to give me a weird vibe from this strip. Maybe it’s their creepy looking eyes in panel 4, or maybe it’s just the oddity of several things. I mean, having a party already set up the day she’s being adopted? (Okay maybe it’s set up for later, but the way it was mentioned sounded like TODAY.) Plus having both types of cake already prepared? And they have to leave RIGHT now?
Honestly, having to leave right now makes scence if you have a party planned, doesn’t it? I don’t know why everyone is so down on these two.
And two cakes because they don’t know which she’d like. You only get adopted once (hopefully) and they wanted to make it special.
Disclaimer: *I* had a party when I was brought home when *I* was adopted. And I’m still alive 30 years later.
It’s not the party plans that make me doubt the new parents’ future success, but their words from earlier. They’re looking for the “perfect kid” they can show off to all their childless yuppie friends, but no-one’s perfect, so I’m afraid of what’s going to happen when Heather (hope I got the name right) turns out to be real person instead of a doll.
Just an odd question, but is the reason they can’t have kids because “Barb” used to be “Ben”? Usually woman who act that way have had many breast-implants, if they didn’t already have double-E cups to start with. Them tiny tot’s make me think Pre-op shirt-squishies.
I think I ignored this comment for too long, so I have to come back and speak my voice.
The way you talked about that woman was VERY RUDE. Do you know how many women out in the world have to deal with men teasing them about having breasts that are small, how many women have medical conditions that prevent them from having children, and how many women have too big of a nose or lips too thin or eyes to narrow or whatever?
I’m not angry with YOU, I’m angry at how it was PERCEIVED.
Women in the media are labeled to be “perfect” with their visible ribs and vertebrae, their extreme diets and eating disorders.
A woman can’t have small breasts and be proud of them? They HAVE to be what MEN want them to be?
The FRIGGIN’ MEDIA is DRIVING ME INSANE…
Dave, I apologize for my “mini-feminist rights movement” rant, but I am sorry. The words in this comment have been eating away at me for TOO LONG for me to keep silent anymore. Feel free to delete it.
Desiree, I bid you good day.
My breasts are about that size and all-natural. Barb is young and childless, she is very likely to be flat chested. I don’t think it’s true that ditzy, materialist women have large bosoms.
Aaaaand cue the Epileptic Trees…
For those who don’t know:
Epileptic trees explained at TV Tropes:

I’m sorry…for some reason I still suspect something bad is gonna happen to Heather X_X
Not seeing her friends again isnΒ΄t bad enough?
She might still go to the same school with them, if the new home isn’t very far away (and if the new parents don’t make her go to a fancy private school).
Yep, they strike me as the kind of people who would send their precious kid to the best private school money can buy, i.e. not the kind of (presumably) public school that orphanage kids would attend.
um… is that girl buckled in like the adults? Don’t see a seatbelt. Just curious. They seem so… unlikeable! Gives me the willies.
Yep, they buckled her in. π
Definitely creeped. Perhaps they find out something isn’t perfect about their new little girl and return her? Whatever it is I definitely don’t get good vibes off these 2.
Why didn’t they just run for the fence to say goodbye? She was RIGHT THERE. Just stop staring sadly and RUN. Sure, no goodbye hugs but at least you get say goodbye at all.
Anyway, yeah, these two give off weird vibes. Especially the comment about there being other children. Could they be…uh… “collectors”?
Not gonna lie, Heather’s new Mom’s lipstick kinda freaks me out
Yes … the super-abundant lipstick is about the only thing that wierded me out visually. LOL
Botox is a heckuva thing.
You do realize that the Botox comment isn’t going to make anyone think any better of that couple? π
goodbye heather ;____;
Ok, just have to say this though it’s counter to what the crowd is crowing.
Having a party the day a child is adopted is totally normal. The friends and family are so excited to welcome a new child into the family that it’s easy to imagine a “welcome home” party. And having two cakes? Hello… they don’t know which the kid would like yet so of course they’ll go over the top and buy both.
Yes I think their parenting skills aren’t top notch. They should have let her say goodbye to her friends and should not make light of her leaving them (“you’ll make new friends”) but that could be chalked up to inexperience. Also if they’ve got folks waiting for them to arrive for that party I can understand the “we’ve got to leave right now” attitude. I don’t get a creepy vibe and I’m hoping that she gets her happy ending. Who knows maybe they live near Selkie!
Sure, I understand that new parents are going to be excited, but to me, this just feels like they’re hustling heather out of sight, while stringing her along by saying whatever she wants to hear. Possibly until they can lead her into a soundproofed room with a floor drain, who can say?
Of course, my first reaction to Hamud’s missing parents was, ‘Yeah, they’ve been murdered’, so maybe it’s me who has the problem. π
Oh for the love of mike does this really seem like that sort of comic strip?!
That’s what I keep thinking Mel …
Mel, in one word: Yes.
Rather, the comic itself isn’t dark-themed enough to show something like murder, but it seems the world the comic happens in, is real enough for that kind of thing to be possible. Besides, isn’t it better we’re thinking of murders than child pimping as the “dark background” for the Fairweathers? π
YOU are the creepy one.
I dunno everyone, if there was even the tiniest chance that these parents meant any harm towards Amanda do you think Lillian would have any part of it?
“I practice Judo for a reason”
π
hmmm tempted to make you a selkie in the format i know best, a super hero in Champions online.
I used to play Champions Online! If you make one, I’d be curios to know what archetype/powerset you make her.
So I’ve been reading this comic for a awhile now, and never felt the need to comment. But I think I should point out, that even though your artwork is greatly improving, that you should put in a little more definition from the lips and mouth, the new mom looks like she’s eating something in panel two =p
Thank you for commenting. Ya, I need to practice lips I think. XD
Anybody ever seen the movie The People Under the Stairs?
Not only seen it, but also thought of it when reading this comic – couldn’t remember its name until you mentioned it, though. π
I think everyone’s creeped out by them because they are based off of Barbie and Ken. Barbie was made to look ‘perfect’ while having impossible features no one can really achieve and she is the stereotypical ditzy blonde in a lot of things featuring her. Also, she’s made of plastic and the “we need surgery because we have to look perfect” references there are obvious. I think this is where all the resentment for Barbara is coming from. A lot of people resent Barbie because of what she symbolizes and Barbara’s being based on her is making these feelings surface.
I seriously do not see any of the previously discussed wierdness here. Okay, Barb over-did the lipstick a little, but she wanted to look special for the special day. Yeah, a party seems like exactly the right thing to do to welcome a new member to the family. And, re: the party, I can see several reasons for making haste (so to speak); the party is at a restaraunt or other place where they have reservations and they may be running late – or the party is at home and lots of people are waiting for them (as Kyrielslight said). Cake, two makes perfect sense … especially if it is a BIG party. Yeah, giving her time to say goodbye to her friends would’ve been better, but (since this isn’t a halloween mini-arc) I seriously do not see anything nefarious in it. And really, people who want to harm children do not legally adopt them to do so!
No, I don’t really see anything evil like that coming from Dave … it really would NOT fit with the flavor of the comic at all.
“And really, people who want to harm children do not legally adopt them to do so!”
Um, in the real world that IS an actual hazard with adopted children, which is why the new families should be carefully monitored. As many social services lack the funds to properly do so, child abuse in its many forms does happen even in legally adopted (instead of just fostered) cases. π
Greetings. This is my first post. Just finished reading the comic from the start and I’m loving it so far. The humor is cute, and so are the characters. I gotta ask, are these the same Fairweathers that Todd works for?
Reading the comments here, I noticed that people are reacting to there being two cakes, which honestly feels rather strange to me. In my family, that’s nothing special – even for the smaller parties.
As an example of where I’m coming from, just recently my aunt invited us over for a birthday party for her son (who’s admittedly not a kid anymore). It turned out that we were the only ones invited (for various reasons), making it just us and them (8 people) – and there were three different cakes there, which we didn’t consider unusual in any way.
I suppose we might have differing ideas about what constitutes a cake though… most of ours are homemade, and not as large as those I’ve seen on some cake-making based TV shows (those are huge, often multiple floors)… and not really the same type either.
We do tend to have leftovers, of course, but that’s not really a negative – those get eaten over the next day or two (yum). (Also, at least one of the cakes is usually even better the next day, despite sitting for about 5 days before… π )
Really, REALLY interesting Sims avatars for Selkie with this strip!
