I’m beginning to suspect that Then had a sarcastic wit before everything in Sarnoth went pear shaped, and his experiences since have turned him into this.
I’m on the fence as to whether or not he’s really a jerk or if he’s just pretty much constantly messing with people.
i agree, sarcasm like that is deeply ingrained and not just a recent development….and his love for messing with people could very well be why he joined the cia ๐
iยดm also so *not* bying his brief tear-jerking moment, that was pure manipulation and guilt-tripping. me thinks in another fandom then would be a slytherin!
I have friends like Then. they’ve been through hell, and often use the goading to judge people by reaction.
They also just like messing with people for fun.
Then might have a sarcastic wit, but he has also told Avery that he’s not happy with the status quo between Sarnoth and the humans. Made it pretty clear that his agenda is with Sarnoth, and not with the humans. Not sure I’d trust him much (although I don’t think Todd is privy to this information.)
Frankly nothing he said has anything to do with Todd allowing the favour exchange. He still should be frank that he is not trading favours with someone who’s default attitude is to treat people with contempt or disgust. Todd should be responding “Fair, but I’m still not willing to owe ‘you’ a vague favour.” Then maybe go talk to DR Phole about the outfit.
In a small enough population, money becomes more inefficient. Money, while useful for getting around multi party trade problems, also implies there is a store of wealth available. When there is a store of wealth leisure becomes possible. The last thing a small population struggling to survive needs is someone not contributing. A barter system avoids this problem without creating further strife via forced contribution that is common under heavily communistic societies.
In refugee camps or isolated tribes, having money generally causes more problems.
Yup. Money also isn’t as necessary when everybody knows each other, has a decent idea of what everybody else can do/offer, and can keep track of who owes who what.
Mind you, there’s a reason most humans generally adopted the use of money for any society more complicated than a single settlement.
TBF, I’m the kind of guy that would make this joke about “cashing in on the big favor” when in reality I’m thinking about doing the things anyway and not charging or cashing in anything because I want to do something nice but know they would probably not accept it either for a sense of pride or because they feel like I’m doing charity or something.
I guess I haven’t got Then’s previous behavior in my head, because this section seems very reasonable. He made a joke (similar to how Selkie’s jokes go), and then explained how their system works and that it’s no big deal.
He even makes it clear that while he could take advantage of the system, he finds it odd to even think about doing things that way. That’s a mark of character, isn’t it?
And I really don’t like Then. He’s an annoying jerk. -__- Seriously dude. You’ve been acting like an aggressive bully for a while. Do you expect him to act any other way?
Quick thing; in Todd’s first bubble, the word find is missing the “i”.
But aside from that… Then is clearly bitter, and it makes sense why. He wants to do more, and humans are a contributing factor as to why his people are at war. Not THE reason, when you boil it down, the real reason is the Game of Thr- I mean politics. But then when trying to save his people, most humans were typical humans; “We don’t like what we don’t understand, in fact it scares us.” I can empathize with his bitterness. On the other hand, Todd has been lead around with a carrot on a stick because of red tape, he had little positive interaction with Then, and Then is being snarky when Todd was trying to be sincere. So Todd’s attitude isn’t entirely uncalled for, nor is Then’s. But there you have it; two highly protective personalities butting heads.
Curious: when you can move in 3d, why is everything still in a vertical arrangement? Why aren’t there any, say, couches on the walls? I figure Sarnothi are something like fish, they can change buoyancy or are neutrally buoyant anyway.
Something’s not right with Todd trading favors with a government agent who is involved with his case. It really should be Pohl buying it for Selkie and Todd paying him back. It’s much less controversial that way.
Comes as no surprise to you Dave but I love Then. Flaws and all he’s a fun character to read :p Sarcasm ftw! Though there’s no doubt he could probably be threatening if he wanted to.

I’m with ya on that! Though I think he is clearly benevolent in his actions. He does seam to love goading people though.

In this instance I agree with Then, but to be fair I think Todd’s attitude comes because he’s still not over the bow confiscation.

Barter is inefficient tho…
Given that new clothes = half an hour of cleaning, I think it’s mostly symbolic for them.

Eloquently put!

You hit the nail on the head there.
Todd is reminding me of Amanda and Selkie is reminding me of Then lol
The snark and sacasm is real.
Then is reminding me of Selkie*
If you ask some stupid questions, don’t be surpeised, when you get some stupid answer!

Todd needs to chill the fuck out lol
Considering how Then has been acting/treating him and Selkie? :/
No, I don’t think Todd needs to do anything in this instance. I can see where he’s coming from and would have responded in a similar fashion.
Then is kind of a douche.

Todd is a dick.
Nope. Don’t like or trust Then. I don’t blame Todd for being wary!
I love Then. <3

I guess because gravity works the same underwater as above. Even fish usually swim with their backs up and belly down.

Now we finally know what CIA means ๐
The human species needs to evolve a bit further before we can use cat pictures and videos as currency, methinks…
(And yes, I know that wasn’t the point of the page, but that’s where my brain ran with it…)
I don’t trust Then at all but damned if he isn’t majestic
