Selkie is channeling her inner seagull.
Thought I'd move back to digital inking, because I'd like to try working some stuff I've been looking up out. Also, my pens dried up and the place I get them from is closed on Sundays. >_>
Selkie is channeling her inner seagull.
Well,Amanda. I’d say you’d have a point. But you did it in such an obnoxious way that I don’t care. XD
Go Selkie Go!
Did she, though? I mean it is pretty gross and she wasn’t that obnoxious for reiterating it. I’m going to have to side with Amanda on this one. Today it’s selkie being the bratty one.
Yah I’m with amanda on this espically since there is something with Selkie’s skin that has a poison in it. Her Salvia too eemember the rashes. Selkie is just doing this to piss her sister off but it could make others sick.
Except that hasn’t been proven. At all.
Also,Amanda’s done this to bully her because she’s a different SPECIES. Amanda is being an obnoxious little brat. I don’t side with someone who’s used that word to basically go “Ew! You’re worthless and therefore have no rights to anything other than me treating you like garbage!”
Yes. It’s not obnoxious to call someone a word you use to bully the heck outta them and be a giant jerk. -__-
I’m half with each kid here. Amanda would have been within rights to say she agreed with Grandma if she’d stopped after saying, “Touching all the food is gross.” The fact that she added on “and you’re gross for doing it” turns her legitimate opinion into a well-placed jab at one of Selkie’s known sore spots. Selkie still shouldn’t have risen to the bait but I understand why she did…and panel 5 looks to me like Selkie quickly ran the consequences through her head before touching the chicken and decided, “Its worths its.”
So basically if Amanda had kept her mouth shut,Selkie wouldn’t have done it.
It’s not entirely on Amanda. If Amanda had stopped at the general comment instead of turning it into an attack on Selkie, Selkie probably wouldn’t have touched everything. Alternatively, if Selkie had thought about the consequences and decided bugging Amanda wasn’t worth getting in trouble for touching everything, well, she wouldn’t have touched all the pieces. Either kid could have prevented the end result. Both made poor choices.
Amanda’s a bully and should’ve kept her mouth shut in the first place.
Selkie wouldn’t have done it at all if Amanda hadn’t said something that she’d usually say to bully her.
IMO Selkie is responding to Amanda’s bullying in the best way she has available to her since the adults have a history of doing a piss poor job of responding to and/or preventing it.
Was it right for Selkie to do what she did? No probably not. Was it understandable? Yes.
Was it right for Amanda to say what she did? No, not at all.
Was it understandable? No.
Amanda continues to be a terrible person. I really wish she wasn’t around so much and the comic got back to Todd and Selkie navigating things and Sarnothi story stuff. Andi and Amanda’s characters could move to Siberia (or some other fate which removes them) and I’d be much much happier as a reader
And I hope hope HOPE that Mari is aware enough to suspect that Amanda instigated this if/when she comes and finds out what Selkie did.
Also, chicken wings are a finger food anyway.
Way to go Selkie. You did what you were told not to do literally 5 minutes ago. Kids man, I swear.
Amanda was kinda goading her though. So it’s understandable. :/ I mean dude. Calling someone gross, especially when you do it on every occasion to remind them that they’re worthless, this is an understandable reaction.
Like. Amanda is being obnoxious.
My niece does this all the time, well, not touching community food but being told not to do something and then immediately doing it. I know I did it too. Kids.
It’s not just a kid thing… Tell someone that light years away, a nebula is giving birth to a new star, and they’ll believe you. Tell them a bench has wet paint, and they’ll touch it to be sure. 😛
I swear humanity’s first words were nuh-uh!
Stop! There’s a dangerous tiger in those woods! It’s a man eater!
Nuh-uh!
Dear friends, when the tiger took the young man, we would normally feel bad but seeing all that was left is this left arm and his bloody underwear I can only think maybe he should have listened.
Oddly enough, the Bible’s account of creation has it pretty much that way:
God: There’s only one tree here you shouldn’t eat, and it’ll kill you.
Serpent: Hey humans, God’s just pulling your leg.
Humans: You’re probably right! Let’s eat that deadly fruit.
…which’d be the reason the rest of us get BORN with the desire to disobey rules just out of a sense of orneriness. Adam & Eve infected their offspring with spiritual death, the certain future of physical death, and the possibility of eternal death.
(At least, that’s the account from one way of reading the Bible. I can’t speak for other interpretations.)
I always interpreted that story to God being the ultimate trickster.
You got this delicious red fruit. Don’t eat the wonderful miraculous candy colored red fruit that offers you incredible knowledge!
Given that along with death it was the only way for them to also be able to have children it always made me think God just wanted to see what would happen. Which actually explains the majority of the problems of evil in this world. God sort of just wants to see what we’ll do.
Nuh-uh sure is a powerful word.
I think God just really wasn’t mature enough for pets.
Yeah, you might be onto something considering the whole tale reads like an old Rocky and Bullwinkle Fractured Fairy Tale.
To be fair, this was less about being disobedient and more a pissed off reaction to Amanda being an obnoxious twerp.
Especially when Amanda’s using a word that she’s used to make fun of her with.
When I was a kid and we had treats for dinner or dessert, I remember that sometimes my sister would lick every one so that she’d have them to herself. (As an adult, I can’t tell you WHY this kept me from eating the treats, because my sister and I used to regularly share popsicles and lollipops – I just remember that if she licked food it was “gross” and off-limits!) That’s basically what Selkie is doing here. It’s SO cute to see both her and Amanda being “typical” kids! 😀
*facepalm*
Yep. Selkie: stupid move.
is it just me, or are they acting kinda like siblings right now?
They’re certainly acting like me and my siblings!
Sibling relationship confirmed. 😀
I’m really confused… The chicken appears to be breaded. Doesn’t this set off Selkie’s allergies given she can’t eat hamburger buns?
I used to hate the breading on fried chicken, but I loved the flavor it put in the meat, so I can confirm that eating around the breading is doable.
Todd has “breaded” nuggets for her with cheese and butter. I imagine she may have a special bucket just for her of wings like that. Or they may not be breaded at all but just really crispy
Amanda, you got what you wanted. You insult and bait Selkie, and now can play the Wounded Gazelle Gambit for Selkie’s instinctive reacting to your obvious bait. Happy now?
That gambit works for pretending to be innocent when baiting someone into getting in trouble, right?
Can Selkie have eggs? What about nuts? Milk?
Eggs yes, nuts no, milk yes. She has been seen eating cheese for instance.
umad Amanda? XD
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes, Amanda.
I gotta remember that one.
I’m loving the return to digital inking! These softer lines work really nicely with the art. Especially the rainbow hair, which looks much less jarring this way. It’s always been fun to see the ways Dave has experimented with the art over the years.
*snort* don´t even try to pretend that this isn´t exactly what you wanted amanda…..and its telling that she´s calling for mari and NOT her parents – she wants to get selkie in grandma´s bad books on purpose. though to be fair, i don´t think its just her being mean but also (at least subconsciously) the fear that if grandma like selkie she won´t like amanda and she gets kicked out (again). that girl has serious abandonment issues, no wonder given her past, and she needs to learn that in a family there is enough space for TWO girls.
Calling Grandma makes sense to me. GRANDMA is the adult that said, “Don’t do it”, not Todd or Andi. When a child disobeys an adult (one that actually has authority to issue the child an order), you complain to that adult.
And just when you think there’s a glimmer of hope for Amanda to be a decent human being she reminds me why I read the comic inspite of her, not because of her. I would never wish this on a real person, ever, but I wouldn’t mind at this point if her character got eaten by a bear or something.
And if Selkie gets in trouble over this and Amanda gets away with bullying yet again, I don’t know man, I don’t know…
Speaking of Amanda, are we ever going to get to see her former foster family be gruesomely mutilated, or will it just happen off-panel?
Maybe if it was the 90s and Amanda changed her name to Death Harvest and wore a questionable costume.
I can’t remember which strip it was on, but I want to think that Dave did confirm that other authorities were aware or made aware of the circumstances of Amanda’s return to the orphanage. So I’m hoping that *something* happened with the Sandersons, but if it did I’m guessing it’ll remain a mystery for the foreseeable future.
