Damn, Theo and Mari looked amazing. Not saying they’re ugly now; not by a long shot. Just wowzers. Also I love this story; and Mari’s disapproving look the younger Todd is getting. Hehehe seems Amanda does share her Father’s spitfire temperament.
Or dressed. The outfit, hair included, already looks like the beginnings of the punk rock style we know he would later adopt, even factoring for Battle Damage. A bit grunge-leaning perhaps, but firmly in the grips of the counterculture nonetheless.
I’d tend to guess the issue wasn’t the word so much as the tone…you can make anything derogatory with the right inflection, never mind if the word itself has baggage with it (which punk /does/, though I’d doubt young Todd was particularly familiar with all it’s nuances).
the black hair threw me for a second, but I would think by his 14-year-old aesthetic that being called a punk would be a compliment? Also funny that by high school he was pretty firmly punk, also his ringtone currently for Andi is Punkasaurus Rex if memory serves.
Race has been bifly mentioned before. The agent asked Todd about how he thought people who couldn’t accept a small melanin percentage would react to a different race altogether. Likely doesn’t show up much due to where the character focuses are. The orohanage isnt likely to see a lot of racism due to how mixed it is and the kids feeling a kinship due to circumstance. Todd seems to be in a position where he can fully choose who he associates with even at work and would immediately distance himself. So that leaves only brief side characters who could cme in and out. Even assuming Dave wanted to at some point in the future, there really isn’t an area to introduce it much at this time without bringing in a new semi regular character.
Dave, what is the age difference between the siblings? I know Todd is the oldest. I was pegging him as being around 27 and Antoine as 20 at most given his statement of how many more years of college he has left. What are their actual ages again?
Remember the second time Todd met Selkie? She accused him of being full of crap, which triggered a memory for him, and he laughed at the memory, and she wnt ballistic.
…also, stories where the parental unit end up in jail are maybe NOT the best to tell the kids, at least not until theyยดre much older. you know, setting a bad example and such….
It might help her actually – having someone react not angrily or meekly but sort of ignoring it – might actually help Amanda be able to put things into more perspective. Especially since he did explain why he laughed and that it wasn’t at her, but at a memory.
Eh, a small amount of “you’re being silly” is ok, kids need to not always be treated as if their every pronouncement is precious and brilliant, it’s just a fine line between ‘not taking a tantrum seriously’ and ‘teasing the kid until they meltdown’. Hopefully uncle Annie won’t cross that line, but the middle kid is often the one who the worst for pushing boundaries and taking a joke too far.
C’mon, Todd, you have to realize that half the fun in the life of aunts and uncles is telling embarrassing stories about parents to their nieces and nephews. My brother-in-law and I are gleefully waiting for our mutual niece to get old enough to enjoy those types of stories!
The other half of the fun is involving the niece in schemes and mischief giving her very fond memories when she becomes an adult. I love bringing her along on searches for trouble.
I’m picturing Antoine taking Selkie to Seattle to the fish market where they throw fish everywhere just so for months she just keeps asking Todd if they can buy the place.
Heh… Theo definitely has “The Look” down pat. It’s the look pretty much all fathers give their teenagers once in awhile. It’s the look of of pure disappointment that makes even to most badass kid wish he was being whooped. ๐

I dread the thought of having my own kids for exactly this reason.
Same here! I also just love the expression on Theo’s face in that last panel.
Yes, I love these character designs! Theo looks so distinguished!
This is precisely why I dread the thought of having children.
Dang, that first iteration took FOREVER to show up.
Yeah, you can see the look Mari gave Andi earlier being given to Todd right now.
So, Theo is a… …cook? Chef? Officer in the Imperio? (http://www.drivecomic.com)
Yes, what is that jacket? He looks like Ricky Ricardo ๐
Well, Theo’s biography says he’s a restaurant manager … maybe, at this time, he was still working his way up the ranks?
14-year-old white kid running around with a 9 or 10-year-old black kid?
I think they’d say something worse than “punk”.
When has race ever been relevent in this universe? Never. Only species.
To be honest, race relations exist in the Selkieverse, I just choose not to make them a point of focus
Also, they probably did not call him “punk” because he was hanging out with a black kid. It’s probably more because of the way Todd acted.

This is also a conversation with a child. There is no guarantee the conversation went quite like this.

Antoine is 19, Marta is 23, Todd is 26.
Guess they ARE sisters.
Remember the second time Todd met Selkie? She accused him of being full of crap, which triggered a memory for him, and he laughed at the memory, and she wnt ballistic.
“DON’T LAUGH AT ME!!!”
sware jar!!!
DAMN MARI! You look hot!
Looks like Todd went through a Goth phase, too.
which is why ‘punk’ was such a grave insult!

Something says they said more than just punk though.
Antoine,NO. You’ve already shoved your foot in your mouth enough for today.
I can’t wait for a more appropriate time to use “Daddy’s little hooligan” in reference to Amanda.
Hey, called it. ๐
I’m almost hoping that Antoine keeps reacting this way to her meltdown instead of trying to repair her ego. Would be a good reality check for her.
Yeah,no. That’ll just escalate things until Amanda punches things. It’s completely unneeded.
It might help her actually – having someone react not angrily or meekly but sort of ignoring it – might actually help Amanda be able to put things into more perspective. Especially since he did explain why he laughed and that it wasn’t at her, but at a memory.

I’d say Uncle Antoine has already made a good start on that, with Selkie … everyone remember the eel incident?

Can’t believe no one mentioned this – “Swear Jar!”
