I really liked the dialogue-less flashback we had for Andi earlier, and felt like returning to that idea.

i just thought she had magic powers until i read the comment
Maybe she does. Maybe it’s a magic improvised marionette. It does look like that to me. That, or seaweed puppet strings.
Hm…reminds me of the closed-hand-touching-the-temple gesture from the Alien Nation TV series. Nice.
I thought it was just a Mommy gently brushing the hair off her little girl’s forehead.
I thought it looked like she was putting the barrette in Selkie’s hair.
Wow! Is this the first time we’ve ever seen someone else of Selkie’s race/species? That’s pretty amazing. Also interesting that her clothes are cut to allow for gill-breathing… suggests there’s somewhere her people are completely normal, and don’t have to worry about freaking out the non-purple (PERIWINKLE!) people with their anatomy. Intriguing…
Not quite the first time;

Nice pickup ai vin! I’d forgotten about that particular reveal.
interpretation:
top left= cultural delicacy
top right= cross culture trade
middle right= magic/marionette?
bottom left= signing
bottom right= parental affection
PS
props on the anatomically effective cloths.
I think her mother might be dead.
It makes me wonder who it really was who dropped Selkie off at the orphanage, her mom or that woman from the cabin by the water.
If a human woman had dropped her off, the orphanage probably wouldn´t have automatically assumed her to be Selkie´s mother.
Speaking of parents, I cannot help but nothing who is *not* in this flashback: Selkie´s father. We know her species doesn´t reproduce by parthenogenesis, so where is he? Selkie and her mom seemed to be living by themselves, without any others of their kind.
I´m beginning to get the idea that Selkie is being hidden, either from some of her own people, or from someone who is searching for her people. Someone (Dave?) once remarked that Calumet City is about as far from a body of water as you can get in the US, so presumably Selkie was brought there because it is the last place where someone would look for an amphibious humanoid.
Maybe that’s why Dave showed us this; https://selkiecomic.com/?p=826
If this isn´t the unlikliest coincidence ever – TWO of her species hiding, independently of one another, in the last place anyone would think to look for them – then I´d say “Dr. Fishface” is looking after Selkie.
Or perhaps he is looking *for* her. Because, if I was looking for someone, the last place anyone would think to look for them would be the first place I´d look, since that´s where they´d probably hide.
BTW: “If a human woman had dropped her off, the orphanage probably wouldn´t have automatically assumed her to be Selkie´s mother.”
That would be a good arguement – in the real world. But this is a comic, and we’ve already seen that people in it don’t even automatically assume that Selkie is NOT human herself. They assume she just has a “condition” or something.
Nice flashback.
I assume that the peculiar design of the tops is to allow them breathe out through their gills more easily?
I…I do not know what is happening here.
Aside from some happy mommy/daughter moments, obviously. I just can’t tell what exactly it is that they’re doing.
That said, I keep finding it interesting how much Selkie remembers of her mother. Does she know what happened to her mom, or why she went into the orphanage? I’d imagine that her mother just leaving her there, considering how much she obviously remembers, would have had a severe detrimental effect on her. But that may b the case and would explain her desire for affection and family.
I also find it interesting they had a house on a lake(I’m guessing), or talked to someone who did.
Clean up complete. :3
Umm… what are they doing? I’m sorry, but the top left activity seriously looks like they’re chewing on rocks. Nutritional supplements? And what are they doing bottom left? It looks like Selkie’s whole lower half has been chopped off. Most of the pages in this story are crystal clear and beautiful, but this one is confusing, and I’m sorry to say, it’s kind of poorly drawn as well.
I think they are eating mussels and they are standing in shallow water, that’s why you can’t see the legs.
The alternative to kissing escapes me, if it isn’t the caress at the bottom right.
While, compared to the other strips, this does appear either poorly drawn or, possibly, drawn by another artist trying to copy Dave’s work, I’m pretty sure it’s because this is a memory, and dreams and memories are not usually as sharp as real life. Especially memories that are several years old. So this is drawn a little softer – a little fuzzier.
Just realised, she’s going to kick ass on her school swim team in high school.
She can´t used (chemically treated) tap water to flush her gills, so I think swimming in chlorinated pool water would be a BAD idea for her.
I wanted to give the flashback a sense of having it’s own style, seperate yet similar to the rest of the comic, since it’s Selkie’s memories.
I started out in a scribbly crayon-style but it was completely illegible. XD I wanted to do something simplistic, yet identifiable, in terms of style.
Mini-Selkie = mega cute. (3
Is the puppet on green glowy strings or is she using magic? Also, the eating thing looks more like dried meat or something. And it looks like they visited a farmhouse together. I’m guessing the bottom right gesture is the “tender gesture” Selkie was referring to. Otherwise this is even harder to figure out than Andy’s memories.
Marionette is awesome… I thought it was cat’s cradle with seaweed at first.
And the clothes to fit them were noted. Very cool.
I kinda enjoy no-word strips… two here and one at GWS not too long ago. Some people might not understand them, but I think they can tell a lot at the same time *shrugs*.
Yeah, I thought it was cat’s cradle with jellyfish. LOL
So that’s Selkie’s mom…
It makes sense that the memories are fuzzy and don’t make much sense until you study them. A lot of real memories, especially from a young age, are hard to remember exactly. This page was well done and I like the how the little details look to be the most important parts of this strip.
A lot of pools use salt water rather than chemicals to control the PH.
Yes, but salt water might not be any better for selkie’s gills than chlorinated pool water would.
This page made me cry so hard… I am the birth mother of a beautiful little boy, who I’ll very likely never have the privilege of meeting. I knew that when I put him in his mother’s arms, and accept it. I can’t imagine letting go of a child old enough to remember me. I don’t know if I could stand it.
Mae’n flin ‘da fi, Maia- there’s sorry I am.
So cute, but so sad!!! T_T They looked so happy…how’d she end up in the orphanage?
Maia, your comment breaks my heart. I’m very sorry…I hope your son might find out about you someday. I bet he’d love to meet you.
In a way, I hope he doesn’t… I wish for him to be so happy with the family his birth father and I chose for him that he never feels any need to seek us out. But if he ever does make that choice, part of the terms of his adoption were than he always know he was chosen, and that he always know we let him go because we loved him and wanted what would be best for him. That he was NEVER unwanted. And the agency has all our information (including phone numbers and addresses) on file. His parents can open his file at any time necessary – or authorize his doctor to do so – and he can open it for himself at, I think, 18.
I wonder who the lady in the green dress is. Selkie’s mom looks so young… and so happy.
I really like your use of this soft style for wordless flashbacks. And the images are fascinating. I especially like that her mom seems to have freckles!
Wonder who the lady on the shore is…
Strange question. Has anyone else ever taken Selkie swimming?
I’d imagine chlorinated pools could be a problem for gills, but there must be a lake/pond somewhere.
I’d love to see that girl in the water, I suspect she’d have a blast.
She also has a problem with cold temperatures. What’s the latitude of her new hometown? Would any of the lakes/ponds where have a high enough temperature of her to safely swim?
That brings up another line of thought. If Selkie’s people are evolved for warm fresh water environments that would suggest they’re from someplace tropical (as well as easily hidden from the outside world). Some place like the Amazon river basin. Even if they are aliens such a place would make for a good hiding place when they first got here.
OTOH that woman on the shore looks overdressed for suc a climate. That, and her skintone, suggests somewhere more in the temperate zones.
Dave, is this a clue as to why Selkie’s mom gave her pu? Could she have been looking for someplace warm to keep Selkie before the winter set in?
Did you see the last episode of Korra??!!?!
It was epic!!
…it made me cry…
That’s all I’m gonna say.
PS I like selkie’s mom she’s nice
I just got done watching it!
I’m fairly satisfied with the way it ended. Some of the things I predicted came about, other things I didn’t quite expect.
Amon’s rally demonstration really caught me off guard. I was scared for a bit there.
Could even be as simple as “Amphibious and must come onto land after giving birth for young lungs to acclimate.” Why knows! They do seem to have amphibian qualities.
this better not be lake superior or whatever
