I like your comic Dave, you’re not self absorbed and you haven’t put yourself in your own comic, and it’s well written, AND your drawing’s REALLY improved. You actually made something 100x’s better then what I thought. I’ve come to the conclusion, Web Comics are like crack, except without the long term effects…… 🙂

I’d say [self-deprecating remark] here about posting more than a year after the previous post, but the preceding gap seems to have been over 9000! Er, uh, I mean more than 3 years.

But someone mentioned Selkie’s ‘vomit fish’ drawing in the comments on today’s comic and I had to come look for it. It’s my wallpaper again after a gap of 3 or 4 years! That gap was mostly due to lacking either a decent internet connection or a not-super-slow computer for about 3 1/2 years – a state not consistent with following 20 or more web-comics daily. (Which I had been until my laptop fried its motherboard.)

So that led me there, which led me here, which has made this a very good day, even with tromping around in a foot of snow getting my car released from its dire captivity. (That the release was successful did help.) I also encountered other comments,which I will make my own replies to in another comment [entering MojoJojo mode… or did I already?] which not being this comment will follow it below this comment.[/MojoJojo]

Comics: Advertising for, finding, and copy-paste glitches. That’s a coherent set in that the original comments were consecutive, though perhaps not otherwise. (‘perhaps’ in the sense ‘obviously, but I didn’t want to say that’)

When I found Selkie (maybe 40 to 50 strips in) I was reading Eerie Cuties and Girls with Slingshots, but I didn’t actually get here from the ads. I’m not sure what comic I was reading that got me here, it may not have been one specific comic, but I had read a number of interesting comments from Dave and followed the link back from one of them to his web-site and Selkie.

Similarly, with Shards, I had noticed several interesting comments on Selkie from Jade and followed her link back to Shards. If this says anything about ‘advertising comics’ it would be, that if your comic has some real psychological depth (which Selkie and Shards certainly do), advertise [i]yourself[/i]: Show that same depth by commenting on other comics, particularly ones that are likely to draw readers who are open to such things. (I can see someone thinking [yes, I [i]really can[/i] see you thinking, mwa-ha-ha!!!] ‘psychological depth? Eerie Cuties?’ but it does… think about it.)

And then there is the one about mis-attributed art due to a copy-paste malfunction. Just imagine if someone created the equivalent of ‘auto spell’ for copy-paste. The universe would probably not survive. (This has actually happened on [NAN] occasions, but no one remembers because those realities did not survive.)

  For the curious, ‘NAN’ is sometimes the result of an attempt to show the result of a numerical calculation. It stands for ‘Not A Number’: Or, in other words, ‘that does not compute’.

Anna Rodman’s picture of Selkie offering snorkel-wearing Todd what looks like a conch shell got me thinking. You might have already answered this, but what would happen to Selkie (or any Sarnothi) in a saltwater environment? I don’t mean “could they live there,” since if they could, Sarnothi refugees might have moved to an ocean or bay instead of up to land. But could she at least go to a marine beach and swim for a while?

Some fishes, like sockeye salmon and gulf sturgeon, return to freshwater environments to spawn but spend the rest of their time in saltwater. They’re euryhaline and can survive in a wide range of salinity. American eels are euryhaline, too (but if I’m understanding my Wikipedia correctly, they’re born in the ocean and then make their way inland).

But Sarnothi are…amphibious, yes? They don’t seem to have a skin moisture requirement, so I’m not sure they’re as osmotically sensitive as, say, salamanders. Their skin is probably not as permeable, so the whole salt-imbalance-in-cells wouldn’t be as major of a concern. And it would probably take a while before a really problematic osmotic imbalance occurred.

I’m thinking salt accumulation in Selkie’s gills and the rest of her aquatic respiratory system (which, come to think of it, DOES have a moisture requirement and might be highly sensitive to salt) would be the more pressing concern. Saltwater lifeforms tend to have biological processes to expel excess salt (?), but I’m not sure Sarnothi would have anything like that. Maybe if she just…flushed with freshwater really well afterwards, but I don’t know.

At this point, I imagine she COULD swim at the beach if she really needed to, but she wouldn’t enjoy it and she’d feel really gross afterwards. But what are your thoughts? Beach vacation an option for Selkie, or not so much?

  Its definitely the gill structures that would be the issue with salt water. Sarnothi arent built to process salt through their gill membranes. They can’t breathe salt water. Moreover, they don’t exhale through their noseso they don’t have a way to block water entry. Which is just a long way of saying that sarnothi need wetsuits and face masks for salt water just like humans would
