Singing the Tax Day Blues with a happy smile and an enthusiastic stride… Heather still has much to learn.
I feel like when she gets a bit older, Amanda might identify a bit with The Blues.

I look forward to seeing what happens when Selkie meets the doctor. *giggles at Heather and Amanda’s panels*
Oh–First!
This is probably a weird time to ask, but why is nobody in this universe concerned with the fact that for all intents and purposes, aliens are just kinda chillin’ with em? Has that been explained yet?
It has not been explained in or outside of the strip explicitly, but that time is drawing close. π
It’s going to have to be shortly after this at least. Too many people with Brown, they’ll ask.
Yes, but will he answer? (assuming they actually see him in person this time around)
Because I remember my time at school I seriously hate those bullies, I hope something bad happens to them SOON!
Be careful Tod, don’t want to crash into a Fed.
Looking forward to seeing the doc in action! And btw, I should get a prize for guessing his name, see comments to 343 π
I think maybe Ichthyabod Gillman would have been a funnier name. XD
Never underestimate the power of a good musical montage.
So Heather—it is Heather, isn’t it? gets so hard to keep track beyond the main characters sometimes—anyway, she can say she was country when country wasn’t cool…
Only if she’s putting peanuts in her coke.
Yep, that’s Heather.
For what seemed such a profound betrayal, does it only take being bribed with candy to put those two girls back on speaking terms?
i try searching in youtube “Tax Day Blues” but i don’t find the song… ΒΏis that really the name of the song?
I made the lyrics up. Probably should have said that earlier. XD
I may have to show this to my musical husband and see if we can run with it, (assuming that Dave doesn’t mind).
I don’t mind at all! All I ask is a Youtube link I can share afterwards. π
That can’t be country. Nobody lost their wife, truck, or dog.
Wait for the next verse…
… a little bit louder, a little bit worse!
You’re awesome.
I was drunk the day my Mama got out of prison…
David Allan Coe – “You never even call me by my name”
But seriously, blues aren’t country, any more than ragtime is jazz.
I know that, but I don’t feel Amanda and Heather would have that much finesse to tell the difference.
When Agent Brown learns of what happened at school, I don’t think Trucks parents are going to be able to protect him.
I’m kinda surprised that no-one has commented on Amanda and Heather’s impending situation.
The bullies are targeting the orphans, and the ones hiding are obviously out to get them.
I know I didn’t say it earlier, but I’ve been thinking a lot since this went up, about Amanda’s reaction especially.
I really like where this is going so far, but wouldn’t the children want to tell the teachers what Truck and the other kid said?
also some art advice: i really liked the water paintings, you really have a plethora of realistic human body shapes going for each different character. It’s refreshing. But I couldn’t help but notice one thing-
The hands on your characters aren’t exactly to scale and they’re a bit pointy. Hands in my opinion are some of the hardest things to draw correctly. It takes time and practice, but here’s what helped me..
When you’re about to draw a hand, hold your own hand up in the position that you’re going to draw, and give it a real good look-over. Notice the curves and sections in the digits. While you draw your hands, pause periodically and go back to putting your own hand in that position, and then continue to draw. Photographs of different hands are good to look at too, but when you use your own hands as a model, it’s a much more engrossing experience because you can feel the way they bend and look.
My last suggestion is about Todd’s hair. I’m not trying to be racist at all, believe me, but when it comes to that hair style (the flat top) it’s more of an African American style hair because of the consistency of it. It’s thicker and therefor can stay in that position. Todd doesn’t look natural with it, especially because you’ve drawn him with more wispy-ish hair that’s more natural of Anglo-Saxon-esque men. If this hair style is meant to be a gelled-back look for work, I would try putting in some lines from his forehead to the back to give a sense of body / buoyancy. I like the fact that you give all your characters such different looking hair styles, and normally with every character you DO give them the definition in their hair, but I think maybe you’re so used to drawing Todd the way his hair was in the beginning of the comic that you don’t realize you’re not advancing his hair like you do with the rest of the art.
Overall though, I’m very interested to see where this story arc goes, and as always, the art keeps getting better and better!
I do sometimes hand-model for myself, but I have difficulty holding the position while drawing because I typically use my left arm to hold the paper down and keep it still. But yeah, I noticed it after the fact that Lillian’s hands in particular fail the Face Test (the size of a hand from the bottom of the palm to the tip of the middle finger is roughly the same as the distance between the bottom of your chin and the top of your forehead.) I dunno why I didn’t catch it before. :
And I love the observation about Todd’s hair. You surmised correctly, I hadn’t really thought much about his “work day mode” hair style. Now I’ll have to see where the sketchbook takes me. π
My art teacher suggested in class that instead of holding our paper down, to buy an art clipboard (usually they’re larger than normal, have 2 or more clips (so that you can put the paper in different positions). Some even have lights connected to them. Believe me, it’ll feel weird at first not holding down the paper to draw on it (it took me a while) but over time it’s better for your wrists. Oh, also, another thing I just remembered- my teacher told me that to add depth to your picture, for things that are closer, use thicker lines. For things that are far away, try using lighter lines (just as if you see things closer, it’s more defined, and things far away are less so).
Also when it comes to lines with body/hands/shapes, thick to thin. It gives more definition, especially when drawing curved lines. I know you now use india ink, and using different thickness pens really help with getting that desired affect (plus it looks gorgeous). This might help you- it helped me a lot

btw thanks for responding to me! you’re a great artist and I’m really happy that you took the time to read my constructive criticism π
The doctor looks very… sad. Maybe he’s only worried, and it’s his eye-markings that make him look sad. *worries about why he’s maybe sad*
If I gave a damn about country western music at all, I could probably tell you the name of the artist who was quoted as saying, that the reason he prefers playing county music is that it isn’t very hard.
…But I don’t. Sorry not sorry. It was “Mom’s music” for my entire childhood, and I still don’t like it today.
