You can’t see them in a lot of detail, but Selkie is indeed wearing her Sue and Kathryn boots.
(It’s an old strip but good lord do I still love the Panel 1 expression on Selkie back there. XD)
The action and dialogue in the final two panels was originally something different (that I may reuse later so no telling), but discussions in the previous strip's commentary gave me cause to meditate on how cold dry air would affect Selkie's breathing, which I hadn't considered. So, thanks gang! :D
What will Selkie do? She could get outta her top most layers of clothes. Long as the top ones are good at keeping warmth in, the inside ones will just become super muggy. Then again, I only have experience with cold wind. We never get actual snow here.
Had a situation with frozen cloths when I was a kid. Missed the bus and had to walk to school. Slogged thru a not quite frozen puddle. By the time I go to school both pantlegs were frozen stiff to mid calf, not fun and wet as hell once they thawed out at school. In Alaska the winters get pretty chilly.
where does it snow before november! damn it I have hardly gotten any snow this year!
You can have some of ours! Damn weather, ALWAYS decides to snow on my group’s D&D sessions!
Want some of our snow? 😛
It’s not before November, it’s some time in November.
To be fair, that text bubble is one of the ones I modified. I realized I’d “time-stamped” this arc a little bit earlier in the year than a heavy snow like this would occur (for some reason I thought Wisconsin got heavy early snows), so I tweaked the dialogue to shift this arc into early November. Ziska probably read the earlier version and is using that as a reference.
I was wondering about the boots. Hoping they still fit. I used to get my kids the $3.95 tennis shoes from Walmart. They’d wear out in two months, but by then they needed bigger ones anyway.
Be a terrible thing to buy custom made boots, and pay extra for a rush on ’em, back in the summer and when winter got here she had already outgrown ’em.
I would say she should do it at school again, but…
(Wow, first comment in, like, a year, lol)
they must be up north, here in new york we have about a foot of snow and its still coming down. wouldn’t drinking water help wet her gills a bit with out making her clothes wet?
I wonder if it is necessary for Selkie to “flush” her gills. Could she get by with just misting them? If she could inhale a fine enough spray of water that she wetted her gills without soaking her clothing it would save her a lot of trouble.
I think she needs to flush them to keep them clean.
I notice that Selkie’s lisp has changed from “s” to “sh” — is that because of the temperature, somehow?
Also, I just realized this week that if she really does exhale only through her gills, as I think has been established before, then she must be inhaling when she speaks! This sounds weird when I do it, but if it comes naturally to her species, then probably nobody has noticed it.
If you ever want to address this in the comic, you could have a birthday party scene in which Selkie has to explain why she can’t blow up balloons or blow out candles.
Selkie actually can exhale through her mouth, even though respiration occurs from mouth through gills. My reasoning for this (which I don’t believe I’ve discussed previously, so good catch by the way) is that her people have a secondary diaphragm whose primary purpose is pushing water/air out through the throat to allow noisemaking, ranging from speech and vocal communication to the screeching Selkie displayed earlier (which would be handy for ambush predation, much like owls).
Oh, and the mushy “-sh” is a side effect of mucus-clogged gills.
True that scarf is probably not very dust free and many winter coats have fuzzy lining on the collar to keep the neck warmer from winds. Would cause clogging issues for poor Selkie and not be thought of by most.
It’s kinda weird, but I noticed this and it makes me happy that Todd was more concerned about Selkie’s clothes freezing once she goes outside rather than her possibly spilling water in the car.

This reminds me of that old joke; http://cheezburger.com/6786174464
I love the triumphant “MLG!” in panel 2. Excellent parenting there, distract the unhappy daughter and give her a victory to make her happy. 🙂
