Don’t forget, tomorrow is a Sketch Day bonus Saturday, featuring a beta version of an adult Selkie.
The name of Selkie's other language is "tensei". I mentioned this in narrator text during an earlier flashback sequence on strip #241.

Ohh, the plot thickens!
I love stories that surprise me, short or long arcs. This definitely qualifies!
Ha ha, not as bad as I thought.
Who knows, Selike might be a protected species or something. That’s why you don’t see them walking around all over the place.
She’s a Trout, I thought we covered this? 🙂
Trout is pretty common.
Hmmmm. So, really, he is from the government, and he is there to help?
Here’s a can of worms; does Selkies’ species have a soul?
Yes.
(I am speaking from a position of authority here. I am a church secretary, the first line of impromptu theological reassurance and debate, and thereby fully over-qualified to come up with your answer.)
Selkie is humanoid, therefore “created in God’s image” References to Selkie’s species were omitted from the Bible -except that passage on the destructive horsemen of the apocalypse which is actually referring to the kids at the orphanage if let loose on a kitchen unsupervised- owing to the fact that many things were deliberately left out of the Bible because they would have been too confusing for readers of earlier eras. Thus Planck’s Constant, the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, atomic fusion, Selkie’s species and the rise of reality shows were omitted, except for in the more obscure passages of lost books of the apocrypha.
So, reading between the lines: You’re saying that The Council of Nicea, in establishing religious authority and control (and to save us from confusion), separated divinely inspired writings (governable), from those of questionable origin (ungovernable); censored the book of Dagon as non-canonical; and eliminated references to Cthulhu, Zalgo, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, reincarnation, Schrödinger’s zombie-cat… and Selkie?
Well.. Now I know!
I believe that any truly self-aware and intelligent being has a Soul. Humans are the most obivous example of this on Earth, but with how A.I. technology is developing, I wouldn’t be surprised if one day we have robots asking, “Does this unit have a soul?” And if you’re able to ask that question, the answer is yes.
“If you’re able to ask that question, the answer is yes.”
I /like/ that answer.
That answer was given to a Manticore in Piers Anthony’s Xanth novels. He asked if he had a soul, and was asked back if a soulless creature could or would even ask that question. Always stuck with me…
So you could program a robot to walk up to somebody and ask “Do I have a soul?” and because it was able to say that, by your definition, it would have one.
No.
Entirely different context there.
No… because there’s no such thing as a soul.
I agree, although I am willing to change my mind *IF* enough evidence can be provided for the existence of a soul.
Just remember: “Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.”
I agree with you, but for the sake of avoiding heated arguments, can we all settle on “No more and no less of a soul than humans”?
Yes, I can settle for that.
Works for me.
but, A soul can be defined as the right to be treated as person.
By that standard the answer is yes.
Never heard that one before. I would have thought *being a person* gave you the right to be treated as person.
exactly.
You can define a dog as “anything with four legs”, but will that cause your cat to start barking?
No one can answer that question. It’s simply a matter of personal perspective. Anyone giving you a definite answer is full of shit.
Can we get that family portrait on the wall behind them as wallpaper? Please!?
I thought the CIA was forbidden to operate within the US… This is ominous~ Rules have been changed!
As long as they can get away with it, I doubt the CIA really cares about that.
Besides, Brown might have become involved simply because of his language skills rather than any specific agency affiliation.
Well, the CIA deals with other countries, or in this case, other coultures. So, my guess is there was probably some squabbling over this, but since this is most likely just information gather, it Selkie’s species was given to the Central Intui- er, Intelligence …wait…what the hell does the A stand for? Association? That can’t be right. Can it? Oh. Duh. Brain malfunction
Central Intelligence Agency
(No I didn’t google that. I just woke up)
So yeah. Stuff.
This is a clear example of the CIA’s mind control ray at work obfuscatering your ability to think clearly about… about….
The CIA’s mind control ray is no great worry, it can be easily blocked by adding a tin foil lining to your hat. 😉
Then you just have to worry about the subterranian traffic control beam. 😀
A beta version? You mean like the fish? With the big flowy tails?
I kid. (Though that would be cool.)
I do like you calling it a “beta version”. Way to cover your ass.
Anyway. I think Agent Brown is just watching over her. Making sure she intiragtes into society without and pitchfork weilding mobs appearing or similar.
