I’ve started work on a Selkie-themed watercolor illustration that I may be selling prints of when it’s done. Stay tuned…
My original draft ended on a different "punchline", but I re-wrote it to focus a little more on the Selkie/Amanda interaction. Here is the "deleted scene" of what the last two panels were originally going to say: ----- Todd and Mina stare blankly at the readers. T: She wears a kimono and no purse... where does she keep a cell phone? M: I don't want to think about it... -----
You’re awesome, Selkie.
She keeps it in her obi?
Yeah, that’s where my old girlfriend kept her carried stuff.
That is exactly what I was thinking. I had family members and close friends of family who kept theirs in similar places (since none wore full on kimono).
I used to work retail at a local chain drug store, and once witnessed a customer reach elbow-deep into her bra for cash to buy her items.
There are bras with pockets for things like that, though honestly, I think the only even remotely ok time to use those is for clubbing, prom, and weddings when you can’t really carry a purse… But then you should go into the bathroom beforehand so no one else has to see you dig through your cleavage. Then again, I could just be a weirdo being concerned with people watching me do something like that. (And come on, it is called “nature’s pocket”. Or at least I’ve read that in several places, one an anthropologist report.)
It’s only “Nature’s Pocket” for those who actually have cleavage… like plumbers… Heh… sorry for the bad visual.
I believe that is correct. Because of the massive folds, things can get tucked in quite easily. There also can be pockets in the sleeves, but that wouldn’t be so comfy with a cell, and that’s usually just the ones that have the longer extensions down so they look like wings……
Last panel Amanda face ARGH
Gotta admit, Selkie keeps her cool. Of course, one good bite and Amanda would be short an ARM.
“Kill me and I’m telling.” Fabulous second grade logic.
I love Selkie’s smug face in that second-to-last panel.
“Bye-ee, Amanda”
I wonder what Todd’s gonna tell Selkie about this interaction later.
Is Todd even aware of it? He seems pretty focused on getting that math “prank” straightened out.
Todd is not yet aware. When he IS made aware, in time…. trust me, you won’t miss it.
Oh, that punchline just made a weary Thursday so much better 🙂
Seriously, do not ever redraw this comic, please! All three portraits of the smug Selkie are so, so, perfect.
Thank you.
Easy. She keeps it in the obi. 😛
Poor Amanda… I feel sorry for her: she must suffer a lot.
And I can’t even start to guess what she’ll feel like when she learns that her own father stepped into the orphanage and picked the girl she hated the most in stead of his daughter.
I…never thought about that…damn, that’s gonna be traumatic.
It is my fear that Andi will get Amanda and then both girls will be caught between Andi and Todd’s argument. With Selkie and Amanda having their own bad blood, this could get really messy. Fast.
Hopefully both adults will be the adults and fix things before the children become affected.
Selkie (along with Amanda) needs to learn appropriate behavior, but as someone who was bullied for many years I can sooo understand her gloating.
Agreed. Bad behavior, but totes sympathize.
This is pretty realistic kid behavior.
Children can be nasty. I’m glad I’m not a kid anymore.
I have to say I’ve had a very crappy 36 hours – most of it was spent in toilet in a condition I wish not to recall, and the rest at the clinic with an iv drip to rehydrate my body… finally getting home and sitting zombie-like at the computer for a few moments before getting to bed to sleep for like a week… Today’s fix of Selkieverse was very badly needed, and Selkie’s and Amanda’s interaction in the last 2 panels made it totally worth the wait.
Sorry you’re ill. Get well soon.
been there a few weeks back myself, feel for you man.
Test days become that much better when I have a new Selkie comic waiting at home.
The family resemblence is clearer now

Come to think of it, there may be hope for her yet if Todd had similar issues and was able to shape up.
Last panel. Amanda looks more like Butthead (of MTV fame) than Todd. As soon as I realized it I started laughing and almost woke the baby.
Huh huh huh. Huh huh. Huh huh huh. You said “butt.”
Whoa, nice catch. It’s the exact same blackened eye and three scratches.
Dun dun duuun.
Dave, that pin is adorable. I just ordered mine! 😀
Maybe she keeps it in her bun?
Question about her dietary needs. Waaay back here https://selkiecomic.com/alternate-universe/ in the file, it says, “Trace amounts (of peanuts) which is what is found in some ice creams…” This reads, to me, like she can eat ice cream. Since it’s milk/cream, should be okay. But all ice cream I can think of is flavored with vegetable products – fruit, vanilla, chocolate. Some even have nuts in it – pistachio, rocky road. Even if you didn’t get the good stuff, that’s made with natural flavors and real fruit, you said vegetables taste bad to her, right? And even if you made your own, non-flavored, just cold sweet cream, it’s still sugar, which is vegetable.
So – does she eat ice cream?
And, trying to think of a non-vegetable sweetener, can she eat honey? I know it starts off as pollen, which is vegetable, but steak starts off as grass, and she can eat that.
You’re correct, she doesn’t eat ice cream all that often for flavor reasons. Vanilla, chocolate, strawberries and etc would not taste very good to her. But sugar-free unflavored ice cream, she does like.
(which basically means she only likes frozen milk).
Would frozen salmon terrine work? I have had it semi-frozen once and it was nice. You would have to chose a recipe with care but there are some with only butter+cream/yoghurt and salmon, you would have to leave out the herbs, but I guess you could start from there….
She might like some home-made ice creams… I have a recipe for a soft cheese and fruit ice cream, but I am certain that a soft cheese ice cream by itself might be tasty for her… Or as someone else said, they are making bacon milkshakes (Oh Jack in the Box, how your menu makes me cringe now) but some sort of meat with the cheese or on its own could make an interesting Selkie approved ice cream…
Is this a genuine bacon milkshake, or is it something like what Denny’s and Burger King have tried (vanilla ice cream with bacon on top)?
For the record, I much preferred BK’s attempt over Denny’s’. (How do you indicate the possessive of a possessive?) The chocolate helped offset the vanilla enough to make it mesh better with the bacon. Maple-vanilla-bacon is just too sweet.
And I can just imagine Selkie on Epic Meal Time.
How about this for selkie? Heston Blumenthal actually sells bacon & egg ice cream in waitrose (UK). Here’s a recipe
http://www.channel4.com/4food/recipes/chefs/heston-blumenthal/bacon-and-egg-ice-cream-recipe
Honey starts off as nectar, which is mostly water, sugar and a tiny amount of proteins. The bees add their saliva to it, and then keep vapourizing the water off of it, until it condences into the syrupy product we know as honey.
There’s bacon-flavoured ice cream, you know? Not sold commercially in big batches, but it’s basically a creamy “bacon milkshake” in frozen form. Unsweetened. I’ve been told if you really like bacon, you’ll like it. As I don’t like bacon all that much, I haven’t tried it.
I see that knowing what happened to Amanda early on hasn’t softened Selkie’s feelings towards her any.
What selkie said in the last panel is pretty much the best quote ever
I feel like Todd is a little too focused on this “homework incident”.
I think a lot of good parents would be very focused on it. At this point, he thinks the teacher played the prank and he thinks she did it on purpose. He’s concerned that Selkie is being targeted and bullied by the teacher. He doesn’t know whether or not just Selkie got that prank homework or the whole class did. It’s a legitimate concern and he’s in serious dad mode. He probably wants to get this over with so Selkie doesn’t have to stay there since she was whining about being there a little bit ago. The extreme focus is understandable.
“Kills me and I tells?” Wow. She must have accepted Master Chief as her savior. For he who believeth in him shall never die…at least…not permanently.
