Do we know where this is taking place? That lake seems kindna small so I don’t think it’s the “main” main one where sarnoth is, or? Some remote outpost?
I think the situation is different here because the humans are already strongly favoring one side (you know, the one that isn’t a psychopathic dictator), so it’s not like they’re trying to be neutral. Their reluctance to join an outright shooting war probably has more to do with human weapons and soldiers not being well-suited to fighting underwater, so actually going to war with the sarnothi would go even worse for the United States than Vietnam did. I mean, I guess we could depth-charge them, but that alone can’t win a war if the goal is anything less than total genocide.
Basically, diplomatic disasters are irrelevant because the diplomatic situation is already a disaster, and has been for a long time.
actually the US is perfectly capable of fighting in freshwater down to about 150 feet. 1200 feet if you break out the JIM suits from Oceaneering. 2300 feet for the Old NEWT Suits. and Id lay dollars that the there are some nifty jobs out of titanium and Synthetic sapphire that are capable of WAY deeper but I don’t KNOW about them.
Capable, in the sense of not just flopping around helplessly? Sure. Better at it than the species that actually evolved for that environment, has centuries of experience fighting in it, and has magical powers we barely understand? No.
Modern underwater human warfare is very much a game of “we’re bad at it but we’re hoping the enemy is even worse at it”.
I know this is off topic, but does anyone remember the page where Todd says, “By the invocation of my name am I summoned.”? I wanted to make a reaction image of that panel. If Dave is okay with it, of course.
Hang on. Is that final command telling them to fire on the human witnesses????
I don’t think so? I’m getting that they’re just supposed to keep firing at the fugitives regardless of the fact there are witnesses.
Ignore the humans. Fire on the fugitives.
So they work for the villains.
I agree with Djaevlenselv. I think command is telling them to ignore the humans and keep firing at their orignal target anyway.
Interesting brush for the water

“Use a gun. If that don’t work, use more gun.” – The Engineer
Imagine what an absolute diplomatic disaster it would be if there was human collateral damage from a sarnothi skirmish.
I don’t have to imagine, I read about WWI starting from in internal dispute in Austro-Hungary that got out of hand.

why bother 1000 gallons of clove oil solves that problem.

Now I wanna see lol
That’s a cool looking effect on the water!!
I… do not think that it is wise of the sarnothi to start shooting up the sovereign territory of the United States of America.
oh boy. why do i get the feeling that collateral damage is going to be high. both around the lake and also how people view nei li afterward.
