Today's edition of the Secret Commentary is empty, because Dave failed to come up with something for it.

Ah, I see where this is going. Looks like Tehk was playing with something he shouldn’t have been touching.
Well, this is a much better alternative than *anything* I potentially saw coming. Depending on what that Nunya actually is, of course.
Yeah, so what did TEHK steal??
Stolen….or could be something related to his parents. He *is* living with an uncle.
I made the mistake once, whilst eating Cheetos, of calling them “numya” when my 3 year old asked what I had.
Guess what she thinks Cheetos are called now?? 😂😂
What will be interesting is if Selkie discovers that she *can* fix it.
How does he know that Selkie will know what it is, though?
Tehk? Buddy? You could’ve done all of this without threatening a classmate, and threatening to spill something you KNOW is a big secret for a reason.
The Nunya has a compatriot in the Doofer. One of my favorite National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmarks[0] makes good use of a particular implementation of the doofer.
[0]The 1891 San Francisco Bay scow schooner Alma, built on the southern shore of the bay. The doofer hangs the shore power cord on the dock-side life line when docked and keeps it coiled ewhen stowed below.
You know, at first, Amanda was very unlikeable. But now, I realize that oftentimes some of these folks just have a penchant for getting on her bad side. It’s good that she and Selkie are getting along much better, though.
There’s also been a growing realization, thanks to well-done exposition by Dave, that a lot of her unlikable-ness is due to the various traumas she’s dealt with in her childhood (being adopted and then sent back being high on that list), rather than a conscious decision to be a jerk.
Everyone is being really aggro about a kid who is probably struggling to adjust, has been uprooted from his family and can never go back to his old life :S like sure Tehk has been unpleasant to deal with but what are the odds this is something he stole vs this is some trinket he managed to keep on him after being deemed an expat
Because typically if it’s something that belongs to you, you don’t have to worry about being secretive about getting the broken thing fixed since you can ask the adults around you. But if you take something you KNOW you weren’t meant to be messing with and you break it, you’re not so likely to go to the adults for help. Tehk accusing Amanda of stealing Sarnothi tech and using it to blackmail her to get his item fixed by Selkie is basically him holding up a giant sign that says, “I won’t tell the adults you stole something if you don’t tell anyone I stole something.”
I think that is partially tied to the fact that the Sarnothi are not supposed to be showing off this tech due to NDA, which sort of came up in the chapter where Selkie peeks in on Sai Fen.
Just because it’s not supposed to be shown off doesn’t mean that Tehk needs to blackmail Amanda in order to get her to pass the item to Selkie. In fact, Tehk could have just directly passed the item to Selkie himself, but instead he’s actively trying to back Amanda into a corner because he probably believes that having dirt on her is beneficial to him. If you manage to make someone cow to you once because you have dirt on them, you can do it again. This is how bullies get lackeys who will do anything the bully tells them to, because they’re too afraid of getting in trouble with the adults for what they did to rat out the bully until they either learn to stand up for themselves on their own, or some external force helps break the cycle.
Just based on how Dave tends to write stories, and his treatment of Amanda specifically, I think I want to give Tehk the benefit of the doubt and think he’s just an 8-9 year old that’s undergone a really dramatic transformation of his entire life who is acting in extremely negative ways, but it’s because he’s experienced similar difficulties to the foster children and responded in a different and radically negative way, not that he’s just a jerk. IDK. I think there’s more heart and interest in how this entire comic explores trauma responses than to write him off
