Goli doesn’t make it to Wisconsin much.
I flip-flopped on if I wanted to do this diversion page or not, but we’re at a good transition point to the next section of the arc and I’d rather start that on Monday, so small side-step real quick.
I wish AMC would commission a new trailer for their cell phone shaming ritual. Tired of seeing the MnMs.
Calling it now, Jessie’s gonna spread the obvious rumors about Selkie.
I am really surprised that what Jessie is focusing on isn’t the flowers. Or the Orientation thing, or that she had them delivered –didn’t bring them herself. Or any of the other facets that go into the mystery of what ‘n why. Isn’t that what’s important? The what and the why? Kids charge stuff all the time, don’t they?
As I recall, Jessie’s old girlfriend was a shopaholic. Jessie may be really sensitive on the subject of someone spending money that doesn’t belong to them.
Ah, crap, that’s right! I had remembered that she was a shoe freak, forgot she was a compulsive about buying stuff. Thanks for remembering. I should reread the archives.
Mina’s daughter is so cute!
Damn Dave, your art improved!
Yeah, that link really highlighted just how much more fluid and expressive the characters are now! Everyone just stood around rigidly in those earlier strips, while now they look much more alive and “in motion”, even when they’re just standing around talking (like in this strip). Still prefer the cleaner lineart of the older pages, though. But still, nice work Dave!
Wondering about the custody battle in Mina’s situation…almost always they give custody to the mother unless she’s deemed unfit (which even then is usually a hard sell). Mina is a teacher with a stable income and it doesn’t make sense that her ex husband would have custody. If we don’t see it played out, I hope it will at least be explained eventually.
Goli might spend the school year with her father, and vacations with mom? Joint custody, Goli’s prior school was in Oregon, and it gave more stability to stay with dad and finish school with friends and maybe more grandparents available.
If he wanted a higher percentage custody than Mina, it’s not hard to believe he could get it. The amount of the split does seem surprising from what we know of Mina; assuming the dad is also stable, you’d think it’d be closer to 50/50. Of course, they live far apart, and like A.Beth said, that could factor in. But if they lived in Oregon, then it is surprising that Mina would move so far away
It’s possible she didn’t have a job at the time of the initial split up. If she left him, instead of vice versa, that also could have been a contributing factor. So-called “stability” is a huge issue in custody battles, and it basically boils down to which parent has more money, more power in the relationship, and more inclination/ability to keep the child in the public school they’re enrolled in.
An alternate explanation could be a cultural one. Father figures are important in Islam. A person without a father is considered an orphan, even if their mother is still alive. If the divorce (or separation) was amicable, they may have made a deal among themselves that favored the father, due to a patriarchal balance of social power in their family.
