Oh man, yesterday was a blast! Saw U2 perform live. They put on an amazing show!
– – – – –
This is both the first official introduction of Todd’s siblings, and the last of the side comics! See you all Thursday when we start the next chapter.
My google searches are a bit conflicting on whether the building in panel 1 is part of General Mitchell International, or the Quadracci Pavilion of the Milwaukee Art Museum. I can only hope I gambled correctly.

That is, hilarious. The last panel is just… XD It’s beautiful.
Heh, I like them. Tod’s sister is… spunky. ^^
Ok, I can already tell that Antoine is going to be one of my favorite characters. He’s coming off like the big brother that I always wanted.
There’s a typo in the second to last panel. “we’e” instead of “we’re”.
Thanks, I’ll fix it after I add more background people.
I thought it was slang/street accent stuff LOL
Panel 7 is very well done. And I like how the clock moved with the progression on the strip. A good finishing touch.
And don’t worry about late updates. If we didn’t like the story, we wouldn’t read it. I’m just grateful you haven’t up and quit without a proper ending. That has happened far too many times for my liking.
oh and there should be a comma after “Mom” in the third panel.
I know what you mean, I hate when good comics wither and fade.
WELL SAID. Fallen… I’m still mourning for it.
WOOOO! Milwaukee!
That’s definitely the Milwaukee art museum. The airport has a “discombobulation zone” but is otherwise uninteresting (and not on the lake). But still, awesome comic! Thanks.
Funny comic. One thing, though- I live near Milwaukee, and… Mitchell is actually a pretty nondescript airport. Marta just arrived at the art museum. (Still, I understand why you chose that building.)
Thanks, I was afraid that I had mis-attributed the building. Silly Google…
yeah, you can tell they’re siblings.
(snickers) I have to say, I really like this strip.
YUP, this is exactly how my sister and I are like.
Wow, is he a packers player, or is he just a big guy who happens to be wearing a fan jersey?
Fan jersey. Antoine is an undeclared college freshman.
Sadly it is indeed the art museum in down town Milwaukee (nice drawing though, recognized it immediately)
The airport really has no distinguishable features other than the stupid 6 million dollar art mobile in side (its just a bunch of dots dangling from the ceiling) or the airplane statue on the parking structure that replaced what would of been a 6 story tall blue shirt.
I think a 6 foot tall blue shirt would be a great statue for an airport to have, in a “what the heck” sort of way.
not 6 foot… 6 story… up the whole side of the parking structure… was meant to be a tribute to the working man.. blue color some how to some one equels blue shirt…(shrug)
XD Oh, the wonderful world of siblings… I have three of them. And that is a lot like how two of them act with me! That last panel especially reminds me of when Jesse hugs me and won’t let go.
And as Joe pointed out, I like how the clock in the background wasn’t just stuck in the same position in every panel like in most cartoons. Very original, creative touch!
I absolutely cannot wait until Thursday… Selkie comics are always the highlights of my Mondays and Thursdays.
Keep up the amazing work, Dave! :3
Thanks!
First I want to say again how much I enjoy reading this comic. Since there is no suggestion I would make to make the actual COMIC better (because it already rocks) what I am going to suggest is that it would be REALLY nice if there were a “Previous” button up above the comic, so people who can’t read daily don’t have to scroll down and see spoilers to go to the comics a couple days prior. That would be AWESOME.
The friends I have been hooking on Selkie said it would also be nice if (like questionable content and several other comics) clicking on the image itself was the same as clicking “next” it makes it much more enjoyable for a first time reader to go through the whole archive in a couple sittings.
Thanks for the idea, I will see if I can set that up.
Okay, all done. Let me know if those help.
Wonder how they’ll react to Selkie.
Someone gets to be a flower girl.
How do you pronounce Selkie? From sell-key I can get silky and silly, but not soph-e.
I pronounce it the same way, sell key. I just figure “Sophie” is the closest sounding “real name” and people mis-hear it.
Really? Iยดd have thought “Sally” would be a lot closer to “Selkie” than “Sophie”.
So, I would guess that Marta is asian from her hairstyle, facial structure, size, and coloring, not hispanic. I suppose either one works.
Well, she may be Filipina; I had a girlfriend once whom was from the Philippines and spoke Spanish as her first language: she was from Manila, and there still are a lot of Spanish-speakers there. Actually, Marta looks a lot like my ex.
I was including Filipinas in my description of “Asians”. For another Filipina comic strip character that looks *very* Filipina (to compare, it’s not always very easy to convey race in a comic) check out Malaya in (you might have to go back 5-10 strips from today.)
Crap. Borked the href entry, and no editing facility. The comic is Shortpacked!, at http://www.shortpacked.com
Well, that’s a point, but we still don’t know anything about Maria’s ethnicity, or lack of. I, for one, can’t tell who’s from which country or race or whatever. Some black people have become angry with me because I can’t tell if they’re black or not!
I’ve been mistaken a lot for _not_ looking like a Mexican, despite having my entire family there since 4 generations at least, and for some of my coworkers I’ve always been a Mexican, at first sight.
I know what you mean some of my cousins get told that their Asian even though they don’t have a drop of Asian Blood in their veins … I hear it happens from time to time with Native Americans. But they don’t look Asian to me at all.
I have a few friends who are Native Americans (Karuk Nation) and they absolutely look Asian. I guess it would depend, because the current theories are that the Native Americans descended from Asian stock.
Love the comic a lot it’s on my list of things to do on Mondays and Thurdays. The question I have is why did you have to go and combine the two colors that should never be combined? I mean green and yellow just don’t go together (can’t tell what football team I like huh). Good job though on the whole thing
I actually don’t know football. I’m not a sports guy in real life. I sinned?
No, you didn’t sin. Green and yellow are the proper colors of the Green Bay packers. Pat doesn’t like the Packers, hence his facetious remarks about green and yellow.
Ah, sorry. That went right over my head. XD
don’t know what alexis ^^^^ is talking about- there is a previous button! try viewing in firefox. also love the comic! i feel silly that the first time i’m commenting is to point out a button >.< i'd love to more "weird stuff selkie eats" i wonder if starfish taste like anything? and todd could get jellyfish at the local asian mart!
ooo! and live crabs! the food that fights back!
My sister was at that concert! How far did you have to drive?
About two hours or so.
man you’re getting a whole lot better, and fast! The art in this comic is super good compared to your early work, good job!
Also, funny touch with the fatty in the scootermobile in the last panel XD
Hahahahaha, such typical siblings. I love it.
Antoine might be my favorite character now.
It looks kind of like Antoine is choking his sister in panel 2. He must really hate being called “Annie”. lol
Tsk. I’m sure that this strip is somehow wrong…
I just can’t seem to think of why…
Tod’s sister reminds me of my own. She says things along the lines of “I WILL END YOU” all the time.
This is very random and completely unrelated to this strip, but it just occurred to me that Selkie talks like Gollum from LOTR.
Oh, yeah…!
Is it me or does Marta seem to have Red eyes?
They look black to me…
Plus, I love your picture. Elfen Lied is one of my favorite animes.
Wow Dave, that was fast! Thank you!!! I shall try to repay your efforts by spreading the word about how awesome Selkie is ๐
Thanks again,
Alexis
I love this family. All generations, all genders, all species. I love them.
I live there!!! Woot! Goooooo Cheezheads!!!!!! ๐ does this mean selkie lives in wisconsin? O_O where!!!!???? hehe I’m hyper
They live in a fictitious Wisconsin city named Calumet City.
Heh, heh, heh. I’ve done the same thing to my sister.
The art in the next to last panel looks GREAT!
The backstory here is plain:
Once, Antoine was the baby of the family, and while there was much love in that house, there was also much teasing and “you can’t do that; you’re just little!”
Years pass, children grow up.
Now the baby of the family is the giant of the family.
He only rubs it in a little. ^_^
Where is Plo Quar in the strip? There is a periwinkle person behind Antoine’s head in panel 8, but it seems such a person would stick out in a mall. Is she cloaked into the background on one of the panels?
Nope, that is her behind Antoine.
It’s amazing how quickly cultural values can change. This was published in 2011, less than 8 years ago, and when I originally read it, I honestly didn’t perceive what was wrong.
Antoine is totally disrespecting Marta’s bodily autonomy: he’s holding her in the air, while she’s flailing and kicking and yelling and insisting that he put her down, and he refuses to. Yes, they’re siblings, they love each other, but she’s genuinely upset. And this is portrayed as a brief humorous moment. Totally inconsequential, no long-term effects.
Consider a later scene in which the much larger Tommy is holding the much smaller Selkie in the air, while she flails and kicks and yells and insists he puts her down.
