The hosting migration is under way. DNS is propagating, so there may (but hopefully will not) be some chance of your browsers accessing the old site instead of the new one. I am trying to update this strip to both but I’m not 100% if it will work on the old one.
The egg will be fine.
wow….this is so sad. even without the colours you can see how exhausted+worried the mom is. from what little we know about the raising of eggs, i´d say travelling with one is very risky.
….and since they only have a few tanks left(!) we know that this is nowhere near the only momto-be forced to carry her egg while on the run
That may not be possible. Note the parent was holding their egg under water until the tank was brought.
Taking the egg out of the water may kill the baby.
not necessarily there are a DOZEN fish that i can think of that the eggs NEED to be out of water to hatch. I just ordred some killi eggs actually. Mostly the Notho and Panchax families of Khilfish HOWEVER A battery back up with a 150 watt heater and a battery bubbler would be a SMART idea.
not sure where you got the ‘out of water’ – thing, i meant that she was carrying her egg while swimming to the shore….and yeah, a water heater+stuff would be a good idea. i keep thinking back to that big, fancy aquarium pohl had for their egg, where the newly hatched had enough space to swim around in. that tank is really suitable for transport only
Luna, Certain of the killifish families and eels part of thier habitat are Seasonal and semi seasonal lakes/rivers streams. Their eggs expect to be desiccated/dried out, they will enspore naturally and sit in the mud till the next time the lake fills.
Poor mama… but that’s a good mama. Oh man this is sad. :'( Theyve already filled up Havei Jin Suir AND Tel’Para, they need to make another settlement in another lake.,… and then possibly connect all three settlements. Make a Tri-State!
I was waiting for the egg issue to come up. Glad to see someone thought ahead.
Also. If Avery is going to be entering that cold water on a day like this he’s at risk of hypothermia.
If I was saving someone’s kid, I’d risk my friggin life before worrying about myself.
Y’know, at first I was interpreting the comment the way you did, but ai_vin seems right: It’s not so much that he rushed in to save a kid (right thing to do, and in character), it’s that there might be significant consequences. Not like wading into a warm shallow ocean during summer.
Maybe Avery risking his own safety/health in order to assist these guys will actually get him some better “street cred” when it comes to the Sarnothi deciding how to feel about the humans. Even if they may not like some of what the government is up to, they may feel that Avery in particular has their back, if he’s already gone to the hospital over trying to help them with little thought of himself. (Or he might not end up in the hospital, but they might interpret the “getting cold and showing cold symptoms” more strongly than a human would.)
While I don’t necessarily disagree with the sentiment, he has to consider the trade off.
The people coming up out of the water need help — quite possibly more help than is currently available. If he works himself to exhaustion, he’s exhausted — hopefully a good night’s rest gets him back up. If he works himself into genuine illness, he might be out of operation for days, weeks, or more. Which puts more stress on the other helpers, and could very possibly cause someone who needs help to not get it.
So it behooves him to consider those risks, and make damned sure he doesn’t do something that will — however satisfying in the short term — prevent him from helping more people in the long term. No matter how much he’ll hate himself for the cost.
No one — ever — enjoys that type of calculus. It sucks. It’s why so many caretaker type careers — social workers for example — have horrible burnout rates.
This entire situation sucks. The resources intended to support one clan simply won’t stretch to support three. People are going to die because of that. Getting himself soaked to the bone, and quite possibly getting ill as a result, is supremely irresponsible of him.
And also very, very human.
Especially since he appears to be wearing street clothes, which will be frozen 5 minutes after he gets out of the water.
And here’s why Agent Brown’s a real American Hero.
Y’know, it’s actually kinda cool that, through no forward planning or anything, the migration of the Sarnothi is happening at the same time as the migration of this site.
I thought the same thing.
Honest question: what would sarnothi scrambled eggs taste like?
I imagine it would taste like the time your childhood pet died after your father hit it with his car on his way out to “get cigarettes”.

unsalted unpickled salmon Roe. Not a lot of flavor and also ew..
Oooooh! I I’ve always wondered what color “sin” is.
Green. Sin is green.
http://fireemblem.wikia.com/wiki/Sin
But so is magic.
Depends on the sin. According to the webcomic (Sins), they come in a rainbow of colours.
This new emperor of theirs is getting on my nerves.
Seems apt that the migration storyline coincided with the site migration.
Holy…This is a nightmare just…all around.
How are they going to get Every Single Sarnoth, man, woman, child, and egg, and leave no one behind to die in the cold. I mean how resilient are those Eggs and how cold is to cold for the little things.
well don’t see why they could not take over a few swimming complexes for a few days as temporary housing for them. secrecy is out the window so a few direct open actions can be taken now.
We’ve already seen they need fancy bio pools, as the chemicals in the regular ones aren’t good for them.
That said as Pohl and family show they don’t need to be in water at all so w/e.
Drain and refill one to house the eggs (or use a pool that is already “non-chemical”). The adults and older kids can live in human-style housing.
depends on the species of fish Khilifish and certain Eels are resilient as HELL (they ship them DRIED when you purchase the eggs to raise from hatch lings) Same for Shrimp eggs Cichlid eggs are able to be pulled OFF their substrate by their parent. Catfish eggs are pretty damn fragile (aside from corydoras which are like CONCRETE to remove) Shark and ray eggs are REALLY tough.
They don’t need to be in water, except the very young. So they could house adults in sufficiently warm human buildings and provide gill water like Selkie uses.
Most likely they aren’t. An exodus of this scale kills people. Possibly a large number of them.
Given that support was planned for one clan, not the three that are being exiled, humanitarian efforts to minimize — and on an operation of this scale, all you can do is minimize — the death toll are going to fall far, far short. Not enough resources, way more demand. In all likelihood, this is one of the worst disasters ever to effect the Sarnothi.
This new leader weaponises politics and rights quickly. The new “King” will use this scenario quickly and without rest.
This is looking a lot like native American “inner” wars. A subject not taught well outside the states. Where many natives took sides in a conflict beyond them.
Here we have the opposite. People from the inside branching out from the centre. A very interesting idea.
Maybe it’s a bit less subtle, but I’m getting echoes of a certain modern political ‘leader’. Next step: build a wall around Lake Superior.
I just had a thought: This woman seems to be traveling alone. Where’s her husband? How many families have been split up? I imagine some of the men would want to stay behind to fight but we also know there are inter-clan marriages, what if some mates choose to stay because they were allowed to – or were forced to?
I loved selkie’s sunglasses had a whole Charlie parker/joe cool look going on
Dave, how will I find Selkie after the move is complete? Will my bookmark continue to work, or is there a new address I’ll need to replace the former one? I’d hate to lose track of this lovely story.
Yes, it should work fine. The website is still selkiecomic.com, it just points to a new host.
Obviously this story takes place in an alternate universe where Mango Unchained was never elected. Otherwise the agents would be forcibly removing the egg and housing it elsewhere, never to be reunited.
How much time has passed in-story? Assuming the comic debut occurred in (then) present day, it well in the past at this point.
Mango Unchained may be my new favorite euphemism for that individual.
Is he wearing a wet suit? If they have five tanks left, then that implies there have been eggs before, which implies this might not be the first time he’s been in the water.
Hmmmm…. Okay, wouldn’t buckets be a better way to go—at least until they could get the families situated in buildings? They are so much lighter and have handles. If you buy them brand new and make sure to rinse them out (or even use a 1-to-4 bleach to water solution before rinsing) they are as safe for transporting aquatic creatures as any other kind of container.
Tanks are very heavy and even dangerous to move around with water in them, because they are glass and even though it’s tempered it can have stability issues when water is inside and it’s moved so it risks getting cracks or shattering.
Also, never ever EVER carry a tank like Janice is. It’s very easy to slip out of hands if you are carrying it by the wall and if it has water in it, the pressure/weight can make it shatter.
Tanks are best carried from under the base. The acrylic lip gives you much better grip and supports the weight of the glass.
Of course, I know this is a comic and these people have probably had little aquarium handling experience, but it’s an FYI for anyone who keeps aquatic fish/plants. I worked in an aquatics store and volunteered for a zoo for a few years so I learned a few of these things.
Poor mom, poor little baby.
