The wailing of ambulances sang Harold's finale.
His estranged wife and son were called to the scene. A weakened heart, the official decree.
Harold's long years tending the Manor, his service in solitude, were spoken well by the nearby villagers.
But behind closed doors and turned backs, they spoke of a bewitching madness.
Screams in the night. Guttural, inhuman. The Manor's countryside a howling calamity of a man besieged, fortified behind ancient walls.
Harold Melphrin. The solitary warden. The lone caretaker. The howling creature of Helford Manor.

Wow, that story from Andi, by way of Amanda… No lingering resentments or anything?
Why would there be? Because of the estrangement? If this was a story Andi came up on the fly, I could maybe get it, but I’m assuming this is from a book of horror stories that Andi has her reading. This is based on the previous commentary that Lillian advised Andi to have Amanda read above her level. And even if it was from Andi, why would she think of any issues, Andi wants to get back with Todd, she should have been more concerned if it came from Todd.
Ah, one remembers the stories that appeal, and the stories that apply.
I’m not going to give Andi too much credit. Besides me being hella biased about Andi, there’s lots of books who play on the solitary groundskeeper angle, I just finished one a few days ago.
โThe guy ignored his kid, then got haunted and died? ๐โ
Oh, I wasn’t sure what to make of the story. I thought a man had a child with some sort of forest spirit/demon, then got killed by it. Or is that true, and he also has an estranged human family?
i read it more as he was going insane, and the neighbors were hearing him all the while screaming and ranting at basically his own insanity-fueled hallucinations, until finally he freaked himself out so badly that he had a heart attack and died… as for the family, i don’t think they were estranged per se, but really, how often do YOU visit your grand parents? every day? once or twice a month, or like most people now-days, i suspect they only visited on the holidays and birthdays… not that that’s a particularly “bad” thing, but what happens during the REST of the year when you are NOT visiting?… THAT’S what happened here i think.
oops! re-read and saw that she was a WIFE… not grand daughter…
Very MR James, Dave, thank you.
Iโm… Not sure I understood the story? Can I maybe get an explanation…?
