I had this idea for a First Anniversary picture last week but forgot about it until… Thursday-ish. Happys One years to mes. 😀
Today's edition of the Secret Commentary is empty, because Dave failed to come up with something for it.

Aaawwww… Kawaiiii!
So. Insanely. Cute.
This reminds me… how old was Selkie when she was left at the orphanage? Just a baby? But if just a baby, how does she know the “Selkie language”? And if old enough to be able to talk it, why doesn’t she remember her parents properly?
Selkie is currently 8, and when asked she mentioned she was at the orphanage for 3 years so she was about 5 when she got dropped off.
Also, who says she doesn’t have proper memories of her parents? It probebly just makes her sad to think about. She seemed a bit upset and started talking her language when the hair clip was brought up, which she admitted was important to her.

Depending on how long she was with her parent, it’s possible she picked up on the gist of the language, and since she’s a non-human, it’s possible that the language is instilled more quickly/firmly than humans (or, for all it matters, it could be instilled at birth/innate to the species, so it might not’ve been learned at all… I doubt that’s the case, since it seems out-of-vein for the author’s intentions, but who knows). There’s also the fact that by the age of 1 or so, most kids have at least a basic understanding of the language they’re around the most, and as such, even if they change households at that point, they can hold onto things like primary speech differences (like the Japanese L/R difficulty, for an example of a friend of mine, who was born in japan and adopted by a rich American couple around 1.5 years old… he still had a small problem with it at 13).
Also, so as to not offend the author, I don’t presume I know the storyline. My guesses are based on previous explanations he’s had that shows that Selkie is a demi-human of some sort, and shares most of her differences with animals, not aliens. I’m just here thinkin’~
I agree. Besides we don’t know how complete her knowledge of the language is. For all we know it’s babyish babble to an adult of her species and culture.
SHe was about 5 whe n she was left there.
She told Wu that she was left at the orphanage when she was five, back when she was leaving with Todd.
AFAIK she is eight and have been at the orphanage in three years.
You do the math. 😉
I have friends who adopted 2 children from Romania. Each child was adopted about the time they turned 2. When the second was adopted the oldest was 5. Her parents were shocked to discover that she still remembered how to speak Romanian after not hearing it for 3 years. It did however help her new brother make the transition to his new family as well as prompting her to speak of things she remembered from her days in the orphanage.
Children (like my own) can speak well before their 2nd b-day. Think back though, how many memories do you have from your early years? I only have a handful of really strong memories from age 3 or earlier.
congratz on the 1 year. Can’t wait to see where this goes in another year.
and
daaaaaaaaawwwwwwwww baby selkie
Yes, Hippo Birdy’s Two Ewes
Well, I’d say you’ve established a tradition, and there should be a sketch of Selkie at two years old at this time in 2012, at three years old in 2013, and so on.
And, yes, I’m looking forward to reading the comic that long.
Hmm… for some reason, I have the sudden urge to check Selkie.
