It’s a manageable problem, e.g. tell Selkie’s grand-aunt that Theo offered the farm as a place to stay for refugees (since the expulsion of non-“Party” Sarnothi is public knowledge) and they’ll be using the barn for religious practices, which are meant to be a closely-guarded secret. if Grand-Aunty wants to know more? That’s when you start talking about her getting read in. If she’s not curious, no need to bother.
You could also maybe make it more privacy related than religious, as religious might generate more curiousity while most people seem to understand the desire for privacy when naked (what are they up to religious wise vs what are you up to wanting to see them without clothes). Maybe something like every once in a while they need to fully immerse in water naked or something like that. It isn’t that far off from what Selkie actually has to do with her gills, and makes sense that an aquatic species might have trouble with their skin drying out.
Having the echo refuges adapt at the farm, especially if they are kids and don’t know how to control their powers, is a very good idea in my opinion. Being above ground would already be a shock, so adding the shock of integrating with a lot of people in a more urban area would probably be too much.
Dude we are not interested in jack booted thuggery. Eminent domain is one of those cases where the founders got it fucking wrong. you want to talk about a disproportion in power dyamics being a viscious thing. Eminent domain cases where the government siezes land and pays fair market value. (who decides fair market value? oh wait the government does) the governemtn using that particular nasty bit of legislation is the government being judge and jury.
Eminent domain is complicated. It originally started off as a process used in times of war, for things such as forts. The process is very commonly abused and used against people who lack the means to fight against it. You can also run into situations where there is no good answer, for example, building a new highway to handle increased traffic in an urban or suburban area would probably require eminent domain. It got really bad (in my opinion at least) in 2005. “In Kelo v. City of New London, the Supreme Court held that “economic development” constituted a “public use” that justified the taking of private property through eminent domain. According to this decision, the government can utilize eminent domain to seize your property whenever the government deems it necessary for “economic development.”” This resulted in eminent domain being used to forcibly take away someone’s land and then sell it to a company like Walmart for a new superstore. The claim is that they are developing and improving a blighted area, but it results in profits for the company.
My guess, Brown and the other MIBs want the farm to become a training ground for other Echos, likely to include the ones that crashed the wedding.
I see a problem though – He needs to discuss it with his sister, who co-owns the property.

Eminent Domain. Give them a “fair market price”, and it belongs to the government. Goes back to the founding of the Nation.
